Street Bikes

Il4's tend to produce peak power further up the rev range and will rev upto about 13.5kish (for streetbikes) .
Twins tend to have quite a linear power delivery with peak torque at about 5krpm so very punch around town and drive hard out of corners .. where with IL4's they like to be revved to go quick .

I wouldnt really call the bandit revvy but i suppose it is compared the SV . Both are fun to ride but in completley different ways . Although people seem to prefer IL4's compared to Vtwins .

The sv comes in 2 types ... basic naked and slightly sportier version but basically there the same bike with just a slightly different riding position .

Street bikes is a rather vague descripton as any bike could be classed as that but generally they tend to be naked with wide bars so SV/Bandit/Hornet/Monster/CB/GS etc etc

You need to try them both to see what you like... I have had IL4's all my life but now have a vtwin and love it ... But have a fancy for another IL4 but will see what next year brings .

Interesting, thanks guys.

I ask of course because next summer I will be buying, and I can't be bothered with a little 125 as I can take the DAS now.

However, as I will be commuting in London everyday, I would be a little mad to go too bezerk getting something I would not want scratched.

So I see it as two horse race between either a hornet, or the Suzuki, either the bandit or the sv650??

Anything else I should consider?

But then nothing is as good value as the naked sv650, is it?

And, can I really ride this with no prior experience?

Is there some sense in getting a cg125 that I can throw on the floor, etc?

Depends what u call good value . Sv's are budget bikes and will melt infront of yer eyes if not well cared for (same with bandit) . I dont know yer budget but i would get a Hornet .. Great engine decent handling and decent finish .

Budget is limitless.

But I never see any point in wasting money if you don't have to.

Obviously am concerned about salt/wet too.

Ac50 will help but had a look at some 1 year old suzukis and they looked 5 years old (even with ac50)

The new Gsr is amazin value.. My dealer is doing them for 4k new which is insane . But my money would be on a late model Hornet . Its docile enough to learn on but when u want abit of fun it rises to the chalenge. Decent owners club and loads of go faster extras .

But all i can say is past yer test and go ride a few .. As you cant really decide untill you have tried a few and see what you prefer .

I would suggest either a Suzuki SV650, Honda Hornet or Kawasaki ER6.

The hornet will be more expensive but a slightly better finish. The SV will have *** best day to day engine out of them and the ER6 will be a close 2nd although not quite as powerful as the SV. The hornet will make lots more power but be far more revvy and not pull as easily at low speed in higher gears.

None of them will be too much of a handful as a first bike as long as you realise the throttle goes both ways. A naked SV650 will crash the best out of them. As a first bike this is something to consider, they cost very little to repair due to plentiful 2nd hand spares and cheap dealer parts.

The CG125 is a good choice for someone who only has CBT but that's about it, if you're gonna get the DAS (and it's worth doing) then get something a bit more powerful, may not be needed when commuting but anything with a speed limit >40 is gonna be fairly awful on a CG, anything bigger than a CG and it'd be fine...

As has been said though, do your DAS, then go round and ride several different bikes like the bandit, hornet, sv650 and anything else you can think of and pick the one you prefer...

But maybe just a gash 125cg instead?
Have you ridden a motorbike yet?
You'll spend either one or two days on a 125 during your DAS then likely move onto a 500c bike for the remaining lessons. That's probably long enough for you to get a feeling for the bikes and make the decision.

The main concern for me is that crap brakes on the CG as opposed to bigger bikes.

But bear in mind I will only be doing about 10 mile round trip as I actually live in London, so it is unlikely I will be going over 40mph.

Is that commute all you're planning on doing with the bike?
I commute 20 miles on a Yamaha SR125 and it's tolerable but I don't have to travel faster than 40mph. Just getting to 40 is a bit of a chore on a 125 though, you've gotta take 1st and 2nd up near redline to even get there in a reasonable time.

From my limited experience with bigger bikes you'd might as well get something a little larger if you're comfortable with handling one during your lessons / test. If you're only commuting then a ratty GS500 would work fine and cost only a little more than a CG125 anyway. I've seen plenty around the £800 mark.
