What is your favourite marque?

Everyday manufacture? That's honestly a hard one. I really don't know. Probably BMW....

TVR is the all out favorite brand though :)

I have always had a love for Vauxhalls, don't really know why.

Grew up around them. The older models espically they just do it for me , and yes I have a soft spot for quick Novas!

Plus ive never had major problems with them, and any problems I have had the parts are always pennies.

I'm actually being semi serious :o I drive an old 8v corsa b and it's a good basic car that puts up with a lot of abuse and poor maintenance..

Where as you on the other hand you are dreaming :p Have you ever driven an AMG merc? :D

Oh! Sorry :p I misread the thread :(

Yes I haven’t driven a Merc let alone an AMG variant :D and that was the whole point of the thread but I can go on looks and general reviews okay this doesn’t count for much, but the only car I have driven is a new Astra and Ford Focus, one day I will buy an AMG Merc :D If I win the Lottey.. :p

/ I see we both like to use a lot of smilies :p

Without actual experience in the cars in question you dont have a clue what you will buy when you have the money, no offence :p

Most of the AMG merc's are not much different than the standard equivalents, or at least i dont think so, the standard equivalents being barges which although superbly comfy and very nice to look at, are just not drivers cars at all. Too many people assume that AMG = drivers car. No, it just means its a faster version of the barge it is based on. Perfect for me, i do mega miles and dont drive fast. A lot of people would be immensely disappointed with them though.

VW/Audi

Generally reliable strong cars that keep their value quite well. Decent enough family cars with a few higher powered variants if you want that sort of thing.

I've always owned VW's, lots of classics etc and never had any major issues with them.

Although I could also be tempted by some Jap high powered rear wheel goodness :)

The one I hate the most, BMW. Mainly because of all the idiots I come across on the roads seem to be driving one of the BMW X series, usually the X5 :( I accept that not all BMW driver are obnoxious idiots who really do think they own the road, and I apologise if your one of the good ones!

Oh I don’t know, always loved the looks, don’t like the old AMGs the new ones look stunning :) We can all dream.

Now back to earth :p well it has to be Vauxhall, Vauxhall cars have always being in the family and the new Astra we have is an okay car so that would by my realistic choice.

Toyota. Simply for the innovation and willingness to push the boundaries as a Jap maker up against the Americans and Europeans. Toyota in the 80's helped bring Jap to the mainstream and continued through the 90's. The cars in paricular:

The MR2 - who was mad enough to think they could release a mid-engined car - the stuff of expensive Italian metal - to be available to the masses? That AW11 engine as well @122bhp, it embarrasses many current 1.6's. The Mk2 took a different path, being more of a GT but the turbo??? Nuts!!!

The Celica - a great everyday sports-hatch and massive rally pedigree. Great cars, always looked good and had a range of engines to appeal to the housewife and petrolhead as well as the average Joe in the middle.

The Supra - Just because they wanted to make something large and daft and 3l twin Turbo. Love the Supra for being a manic.

Lexus - ok, it's an off-shoot but the LS400 cost MORE than the average 3 bed semi (£52k) when it was released! The GS300 was a decent car, ok neither were lookers but mad mad mad idea, particularly as 1994 was the middle of a global recession!

On top of all this, they continued to churn out the Starlet (inc Turbo), the Corrolla (inc Turbo) and assorted other stuff, with particularly special mention to the Hi-lux.

Ive got a W210 E class at the mo, Ive gotta say whilst its big, it doesnt feel as barg-esque as I expected, its plenty chuckable, not as much as a 5'er, but in reality the 5'er is quite possibily the greatest handling car of its ilk, it seems to defy nature in the way it drives:p

Dont forget the IS200 (or well the Japanese RS200 with the BEAMS 3S-GE) and the IS300 with the 2JZ

Luxury sports saloons!

Nicer car to waft in though, which is my point really :)

No other sports car gets close to Porsche in the everyday stakes. For years they have built cars that you can thrash around a track one day and drive to Scotland the next, or sit in traffic the next without any fear of it overheating or getting emotional. No matter when you look for me no sports car gets close to it. Had the TVR, nearly bought a Sagaris and a Noble but at the end of the day though great cars they simply don't have the all around ability or integratory of a Porsche.

So Porsche then, but BMW make a great car too as do many other makes to be fair such as Ford. As my RS4 has been sitting in my Audi dealers for the last 3 days and not for the first time as they try to find out where my horses went and why the engine management light seems to have a fetish for shining at me every couple of months I can agree with the points about Audi, though my wifes has been pretty spot on as have my other ones over the years but they are not as solid as BMW. I can also attest that the A6 Avant loaner I have right now is a ship with wheels and an awful thing!

For everyday family car i would choose
1.Audi
2.Mercedes.

In that order.

Even though BMW's are excellent, good looking cars, i hate them! Prob because of the image of some twit driving up peoples arses acting like they don't have 2 seconds to spare.

As for going fast and racing on track, you really can't beat the early to late 90's turbocharged jap stuff for that, bang for buck. The top 5 jap manufacturers have enviable reliability reputation mixed with world class racing pedigree, it's a win win situation on both counts.

Reliable, really? Rilot on here got rid of an A8 because it went wrong so much it was in the dealer more than his driveway. I've heard a good few others with complaints too.
Split your face in half with smiling? Most of their range is distinctly average in terms of performance, only the S and RS models stand out as being fast.

On the other hand, I've not had a single issue with my A8. Nothing, not even a bulb, it's been impeccable and probably one of the most impressive cars I have owned in virtually all areas, reliabilty included.

Regarding performance, I think this motor forum above all has taught me "relativity"...it's all about what you are used to. I'm *still* impressed with what this derv barge can do. It knocks spots off the faces of lads who think a battleship oil burner is ripe for the picking.

I'm not going to argue with your knowledge of all things MB, but I really think the SL55 is a markedly different beast to the SL500 in enough areas to disagree with that statement. Without going down the technical differences, the exhaust note alone would never, ever disappoint :)

I like individual cars, couldn't really give a stuff what badge is on the front so I don't have a leaning towards any particular Marque.

Im a great fan of nissan. some amazing engines and cars over the years. Not a fan of merc really....and didnt get on that well with my e36 m3
