tried looking round the local sports shops, but none of the employees seem to have a clue :(.

am i likely going to be better with a running shoe style, with decent sole cushioning ?

thanks,

I just use an ordinary pair of running trainers, I don't play to a particularly high level admittedly but it does me and unless you're playing at a high level (at which point you wouldn't be asking the question) it'll probably do you too provided you are comfortable.

cheers peeps i'll have a scamper round the shops and see what they have.

rotters:
sort of things i've seen advertised as squash shoes seemed to have fairly firm soles, not sure if thats whats needed for badminton or not tbh.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use running shoes for badminton. Because there is a lot of side to side and stop/start motion in badminton, you're more likely to end up in hospital with an ankle injury after putting your full weight onto the sharp side edge of the thick chunky sole, and it pivoting. I've played a lot of club badminton and seen a fair few of these injuries.

As rotters suggested, squash shoes with a good tread are OK. They don't have much cushioning but you'll be a lot safer and more nimble in them.

I usually get footwear and equipment from http://www.pwp.com They've got a section for badminton shoes so you can get an idea of the kind of thing that would be ideal.

cheers joe.

would it be worth putting cushion insoles into the squash shoes to add a bit more cushioning or are they likely to cause more problems than they help with ?

Fair enough on not using running shoes, I've used them for badminton for about 6 years on and off without a problem but there are probably better examples of footwear out there.

Not sure about that as i've tried using insoles myself. Try without and see how you get on.
