Throat in the Watergate scandal that led to the downfall of president Richard Nixon in 1974, has died, the Washington Post said today.

He was 95.

The "most famous anonymous source in American history" died in his sleep this morning at a California hospice, reported Bob Woodward, one of the two Post journalists who exposed the Watergate affair.

Mr Felt was associate director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) when he began helping the reporters.

After revealing his identity in 2005, he said he never considered himself a hero, but was just "trying to help".

When Nixon realised that he was going to lose the next election by a landslide, he set up a "dirty tricks department" and funded it with massive cash donations from his most loyal campaign donors. Their tactics were shamelessly illegal; wire-tapping was the least of their crimes.

The truth began to emerge after a bunch of Republican cronies were caught breaking into the Democrats' party headequarters with intent to burgle. When a couple of reporters started to dig into the background of this event, the Republican party denied all knowledge and all involvement. So did the White House... and so, in turn, did Nixon.

The two reporters kept slogging away at it until they were able to prove that Nixon was guilty as sin, and had tried to hide his involvement by running the "dirty tricks department" at arm's length. Deep Throat was their most valued informant.

The case eventually went to court, where the Republicans were publically humiliated and Nixon's fate was sealed.

Like Hitler, he chose to fall on his sword.
 
I looked at the thread title and looked at the poster who made it, not exactly hard to guess it was going to be about the Watergate scandal rather than any other scandalous happening.

RIP Mr Felt, it was a very worthwhile thing to do.

The pseudonym was chosen in honour of the movie. It seems that the reporters and their source all shared the same dirty sense of humour.
