Looking at my cooling and it's not adaquate and I need to do something about it asap.

My chipset on my DS3 is burning hot and I'm sure it shouldn't be that hot. I'm not getting system crashes, but it's hot enough. too hot to touch

Also the Q6600 is running at 80, 80, 73 & 72 with a freezer pro installed, I don't like the fittings.

I'm in an antec case (couple of years old with a 400W PSU) I have a feeling the air flow isn't up to it these days and the side of the case is off atm.. I can turn up the exhaust fan and that drops the temps to the following 74, 74, 68 & 67 but it's damn noisy now

Add a 9800GT, but that seems to be ok.

Basically what is the recommendation for the board and CPU, I like the rating on the Zalaman 9700 and I'm after something with a decent fitting

I used to use a Tuniq Tower and a Thermalright HR-05 on my DS3.. Was running a Q6600 at 3.2ghz.

put a 4cm chipset fan on you nb chipset and i use the new zalman 9700 big boy ,i also have a antec 900 case my temps were nearly like yours o/c'd to 3.5ghz phenom 9950.
swapped all to new case and zalman cooler temps now 38-39 idle

Looking at one of these too, Noctua NH-U12P.

Also looking at the Antec 300, but according to the specs it's narrower than my existing case..

I suppose the crunch is new CPU cooler or case..

Anychance of a picture of the case? Be helpful to determine where your problems air.

But more case airflow does sound like it would do you wonders.

I need to get a modular PSU in the future as these cables are a nightmare.

I could get a fan for the front, but there is no point if the case is no longer up to it

For quick gains, I'd install a front fan, dust your case and parts off (dust is the enemy!) and get some zip ties from Wilko's for £1 and do something with those cables! Your case can take a side 80mm fan, might be worth getting a cheap fan (akasa amber) for this as well.

Long term, I'd start saving for a new case matey. What overclock on the Q6600 have you got, and what stepping is it? Edit: B3 eh? Toasty

Antec 900 is a decent alternative and cheap these days.

*snip*

I'm tempted with the 300, I find the 900 a bit garish.. I like a plain looking case.

From the CPU-Z screenshot, it looks like you haven't overclocked your CPU and even have Speedstep enabled - whcih makes me really wonder at the heat your CPU is putting out under Prime95!!!!!

If that was my system, I would be:

1) Rip it to bits
2) Remount that heatsink. No way you should get to those temperatures with your CPU at stock speeds. Use some decent thermal compound.
3) Clean out all the dust you can find, especially around the CPU socket, the mosfets, and the Heatsink itself.
4) Clean that clutter of cabling! Get some cheapo Zipties and think about airflow.
5) Install that front fan.

Do all that, then come back to us with your temps.

No the cpu isn't clocked at all.

I'll have a look this afternoon, I've always found the AC7 a nightmare to mount, it's hot to touch the heatsink when running prime etc..

I did have the cables tidy, but let it slip, I'll tackle them too, but a modular PSU may be the way to go.

Front fan, I'll look at what I can get, but a Antec 300 is circa £50

Should have thought about it more as there is loads of AS on the CPU and heatsink, too much in my opinon. So just redoing it.

Haven't got another fan yet, but temps are currently:

77, 75, 69 and 69 running prime.

So not much change, mmm...

Is it air flow, HSF or something else...

Looking at the case it seems that everything under the graphics card is a hot zone, and little air will flow from it.

You might want to consider fitting a 120mm fan to the floor of the case. You'll be able to cut it out with ease since it won't be visible, hence you don't need to make an extremely clean job of it.

Is the AC7 a pushpin design? Did you check its properly seated by looking under the motherboard?

Unfortunately yes, and yes I check it's pushed through.

I'll be getting a 120mm case fan tomorrow at least and if I'm mulling

Antec 300 case
Modular PSU - Coolermaster Real Power 520w
Noctua HSF

I'm going to get the Noctua 120mm case fan as I can transfer it.

I get the feeling that the case isn't good for modern systems.

Tidyed up a little, but need to get some cable ties tomorrow to do it proper.

I imagine the chipset is hot due to the crap airflow
