Street Bikes

Well, that is an estimate - not really sure where I will be living this time next year, but assume it will be nearer than now, which is about 8 miles each way.

cycling throuhg london is a great laugh I do Croydon to Holborn most of the year, but am considering a second bike for the commute its a 25 mile round trip.

Sounds cool - I just worry about getting run over. It just seems so dangerous on the roads without having any real presence/visibility.

How long does 25 miles take?

All you're likey to do by having a motorbike is give yourself a false sense of security to be honest.

Thats not true. It has to be safer, since at least you are going the same speed as traffic, and can position yourself properly on the road.

i find the motorbike gives me one option the bicycle doesnt, and that is to accelerate out of troube, on a bike my only option is to brake/jump off

having said that the motorbike is a big harley so it tends to get plenty of space on the road, the few times i've ridden it in

Are you asking or telling? Ok so I may be overstating it a bit but if you want safety buy a car.

I knew you were coming from the angle, 'bikes arent safe so get a car', but I still think they are safer, from what I see on the roads myself. Admittedly I've not done either, though.

5 MILES EACH WAY? walk or cycle.....

If you walk 5 miles to work and back that's at least 2 extra hours on your working day.
Cycling is an idea but unless it's perfectly flat you are going to be at least a bit warm/sweaty by the time you get to work. And what about when it rains (as it very often does in the UK!)

Never buy a bike based on an Internet forum recommendation. You'll get a few good ideas and 100 opinions. Go to a dealer, make it known you are serious about buying something, and do some test rides.
