Thorney Motorsport : Astra VXR-R

Um, I can get a virtually brand new WRX STi (1000 miles on clock) for <£26k, why would I want this?
Becuase the new hatchback Scoob is sheise.

If you'd said however, I can buy an 18 month old RB320 and still pocket £4k, why would I want this? It may be more valid.

Yes, I agree, I much prefer the GD scoobies (so much so that I'm thinking of getting one in the new year), but to be fair I was trying to compare a NEW car rather than a 18 month of car.

I know, but IMO buying a new car is pointless, as my post highlights - but that's another thread entirely :)

its an astra, thats the major problem with it, plus its ugly and they stole the green from the RS which is by no means perfect itself

Oooh, you guys are sooo thrifty with your "value for money" and your "it's an Astra". Does anyone know how this car goes, stops and corners, from a "machinery" perspective or is "astra" and "£26k" too much to digest?

I like the green rim on the wheels. I take it the green and red graphics are harking back to the Castrol DTV era?

It's FF with 300bhp/300ftlb

This means two things, one it will understeer like a pig, two it will have torque steer.

4.9 seconds... yeah ok, good luck with that one ;)

was thinking the same thing.the standard astra vxr struggles to get all its power down so adding 60bhp aint going to help that much.
same with the corsa,no way that will do 5.4-60,it will still be trying to spin its tyres off the rims after 5.4 seconds.
thats the problem these days, everyone just wants more power which doesnt always make a car faster in the real world.

to add:for the people saying-its still an astra/corsa and looks ugly, the focus rs looks hideous and is on a par with the astra, its still a ford

Take a BTCC car, are they rubbish handling and crap purely because they are FF with 300+ HP??

This company are used to tweaking cars for motorsport, chances are it will be much better handling than a standard VXR.

It's not a given that a FF car with 300bhp will 'understeer like a pig' and have loads of torque steer.

A sorted FWD chassis with a good LSD is more than capable of putting 300bhp down without massive understeer and torque steer. Infact a good LSD has the opposite effect, it helps pull the front end in under power.

The amount of clueless comments on this forum when it comes to FWD cars never cease to amaze me.

as much as i dislike the way thorney conduct their business on the VXR forums ( constant bad mouthing of their competition which none of the other big three seem to do)

They did win the dunlop sport maxx trophy with an Corsa VXR-R to almost exactly this specification. The astra VXR didnt win due to some technical problems, but dominated for most of the season

for a car that will "understeer" like a pig, It seems to have raced remarkably well. make no mistake, the thorney astra is not a factory astra with some random bits stuck on.

Actually it is a factory Astra with bits stuck on, unless they are now custom building their own bodyshells, chassis and interior?
