... coming from an 8800GTS and I'm absolutely staggered by the fact it performs no better than the old card.

Obviously this can't be right .. so was hoping for some suggestions on how to get this working properly.

I have an ABit IP35, Q6600 (stock non-g0), 4Gb RAM. I don't overclock.

I did a full reinstall of the drivers, and am using the 180.48s at the moment.

PSU is an Enermax Infiniti 650W.

No beeps or anything at startup. It looks like it's working as intended.

Any ideas ?

Performs no better in what? Your CPU at stock speed isn't exactly a supercomputer. I'd overclock it to 3Gig myself, thats easily in it's reach even though it's not a G0.

Screen resolution? Games you play? If you're playing say, COD4 or something at 1280x960 then you won't really notice a difference in performance because the GTS 512MB is fast enough for that as it is.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

1920x1200

I'm not benchmarking it with a specific tool. I play a lot of WoW and my FPS has either dropped or remained exactly as it was on a much older card.

My RAM is cheap OCUK stuff, so not sure I can get that sort of o/c out of my CPU.

WoW's FPS is determined a lot by the CPU, especially in busy areas where it can drop. Take the advice of the guys above and get the quad running 3.0GHz atleast.

GTX 260 a bit overkill for WoW:confused:

I just upgraded from a EVGA 8800GTS (G92) to a GTX260, definately a big improvement.

As other guys suggested, overclocking your CPU would make a massive difference.

All this is good advice. May i also add that downloading GPU-Z might be worthwhile as that will allow you to confirm the card is running the full 16 lanes on PCI-E as it should.

I would clock the cpu personally although i would have thought you'd see a bit of an improvement no matter what! Especially at that res?!

gt

Also check that your PSU can supply the correct voltages to all rails.

Its around twice the performance of your old card so either WOW is not able to utilise this extra FPS power or you have some other bottleneck in your system which as others have already said may be your CPU.

Play almost any game from the last year and you will see a massive difference going from a 8800 to 260. If you were playing WOW with vsync off then turn it on to eliminate screen tearing and you can also now use lots of AA.

I had problems When i kept shoving High end GFX cards to go with the Athlon FX-55 that i had (2.6ghz), Frame rates were the same at 800x res, and 1680x res, when putting a GTX8800 in with games like Colin Mcrae Dirt (15-18 frames). Wasn't the cards fault, but the processor. Some games are heavily dependent on the CPU.

I now have a quad core 9650 with SLI GTX8800, and just for comparison, i disabled one card, and run DiRT with it, and got 35-45 frames, same card faster processor. Of course my case was more acute than yours, but 3ghz i'd say like the above posters.

I really can't see how a q6600 and a gtx260 can't play wow even at 1920x1200. I've never played the game, but it can't be that demanding surely?
Even with the cpu at stock you would think it would be fine considering there must be thousands of people playing it with far worse specs than that. I would say there's other issues that the op has. He definately shouldn't be getting worse results with a superior video card.

I've seen on websites that people are having probs with low fps on Wow..not looked into it really I hate the game lol but ...from what I've seen I'm wondering if it's a software prob /compatibility prob with the actual game and not hardware..

I could be off the mark but that's the impression I get with google search and a little digging.

upgrading from an 8800GTS 512 to a GTX260 just for WoW, is absolutely pointless, and a total waste of money. an 8800GTS is overkill for WoW, nevermind a GTX260. If you wanted better fps in WoW, you should either overclock your Q6600, or sell it and get one of the Wolfdale dual cores, and overclock that.
Your 8800 is more than enough to see you with a constant 60fps at 1920x1200, provided your CPU is beefy enough.
