Most disappointing game of this year for you?

In order of disappointment:
  1. GTA4
  2. Far Cry 2
  3. Spore
GTA for unrealistic h/w reqs and unstable gameplay. Far Cry 2 for repetitive gameplay and Spore for not being what they'd promised!

At the other end of the spectrum - World of Goo was my nicest surprise of 2008. Only because I hadn't heard of it until a month before release! :D

Red Alert 3, I loved the origional when it came out and i thought Red Alert 2 was good but Red Alert 3 was just pure cack.

Aoc, grinding craft skills ("collect XX ash wood") that was fun, instanced world & pointless PvP. What a shame to cause it wouldn't of been that hard to make AoC a hit, but Funcom rushed it out the door. I liked the class system & the graphics were great.

But surely that's a good thing, if you haven't played those in ages? (your ruined my christmas day :D )

nope its not a good thing at all! :( the fact its the exact same concept, i feel like ive played the same game three times over and nothing has changed, 1997 was the original yeah? and now its 2008, eleven years later and they haven't improved anything, nothing at all, infact its gotten worse!

Well worst game for me this year has to be the one i literally binned stalker clear skies just couldn't get it to run no matter what i did and in the end got totally fed up of spending more time trouble shooting it then playing. Red alert 3 also a big disappointment but i was able to play that so stalker just egded it out.

Depends who you talk to. I was kean on it after seeing the videos released a couple of years earlier. But the gameplay had been trimmed to make it appeal more to casual gamers and thus was a pretty big disappointment :(

It wasn't trimmed to make it appeal to more casual gamers, what they wanted to do was over reaching so far it was a joke, what they wanted, the original plan is simply not possible with the tech and the way games are designed these days.

Infinite possibilities in terms of mutation and growing, and a flowing game that worked for all stages simply isn't possible, never was and was ridiculous to tout the game as being one like that. It surprised me to see that so many people thought it would be like that. At the end of the day for the amount of posibilities and level of evolution they wanted in the game you need essentially, a growing AI that can change things, back in real life you have to physically program every last option, theres a very real limit on how many options you can program in a given time with a given number of people. Same with the engine, theres just no way to make a workable setup which would work at the microscopic and interplanetary level, which led to them having to build 5 games in the space of, well a couple, and they were never going to be good.

Take any fantastic game and ask the developers if they could have done it in 1/5 the time or created 5 separate working version to the same quality and they'd laugh in your face.

Tough one, to be honest I am disappointed a lot more often with games than impressed by them these days. I find most of them far too short, completed in a few days, and largely just flashy graphics rather than any substance. Just so much crap released that people keep on buying which in turn keeps making devs churn out more crap.

Looking back at the year, I would have to say the biggest disappointment for me was Spore.

It really could and should have been something truly evolutionary (pardon the pun) in gaming. In the end though, it was just delays, promises and hype resulting in a limited, restrictive game lacking depth, intelligence and scope.

Spore deff spore.

Age of Conan - Should have been excellent instead it took off like a airplane already on fire. Shame

Farcry 2 - Why is this a sequel? It has nothing to do with the original FC. Played it to the end and was really dissapointed with the ending.

Warhammer Online - Just didnt feel right. Plus the rabid fan boys on all the forums I like to vist, promising this to be the second comming. It wasnt. By a long shot.

Grid - Not sure if it was this year or last, but it still deserves a mention. GFX over everything. Feels like playing a bad holywood film rather than a driving game. Too brown as well.

Spore - Fun for 2-3 hours. Not worth 30 quid though.
