How good is GRID SP :D

Ive just got GRID back off a mate who borrowed it for a while and didnt realise how good this game is. Im not a big fan of arcade racers, but at least with the functional damage theres some skill involved and it is really enjoyable at the same time and more forgiven than sims.

Whats really got me hooked is the SP mode once you get a team mate - Im always now trying to protect his back as I go up the field and trying to manage the race so that I still can finish highly but always ensure he does aswell. It also means Ive had to change my sponsors so he gets money aswell as (overall the team gets more then).

Its just nice to play something thats so polished and makes you wanna start another race. Theres quite a breadth of cars so you do need to adapt your driving style and because of the short superfluous 'seasons' you do feel you are going up the rankings quicker and making headway - its never a slog...

This really is one of my top games of this year. Who else thinks this diamond in the rough is worth more than a quick play?

The 'RPG' element is well thought out - its shallow enough not to annoy people who dont give a crap about the team, but enough depth (see below) to keep you interested.

* You can hire/fire team mates who take different salaries/percentages - not all drivers are available until your team is good enough to sign them
* You get a pie chart breakdown of their skills and fav discipline so I guess you may have to change team mates down the line
* Sponsors have different conditions so you need to change those if you want him to win money

Each season only lasts about 5 events and at the end of each you can enter Le Mans either driving for another team (when you cant afford your own team entry) or as a team - though the cars get expensive so you end up focussing your season(s) on getting enough money so for that Le Mans you can get an entry. Le Mans has a proper day/night cycle and gets pretty dangerous in the dark especially if you lose it in the combination corners near the end of the lap...

Also I like moving the sponsor logo around on my cars so they look good :p - the placements are held individually for each car too!

The polish on the game is great - the rewind aspect looks so amazing - many of my friends have said it looks like a movie. The game doesnt have the fidelity of say Wipeout HD or GT5P and might use bloom a bit too much (its the only game whose shadows actually make me miss corner apexes) , but it does look ever so lovely (was the first PS3 game to make sure I got a HDTV if my monitor didnt support HDCP)..

I hope you enjoy it - the only thing that annoys me is theres no 2 player local play - its all online, which as its an arcade racer I assume is full of idiots...

Wait until you play Midnight Touge or Drift Battle :D

EDIT: Sorry about the music :p

I have been tempted by this game for a while, to tide me over until GT5 comes out. I'd rather not have prologue as it's a bit of a waste having less than half a game! Might just have to nip out and buy it...

Great game after I got used to the handling, but I cant say I ever took notice of my team mate. I completed the game quite easily by just letting him do his own thing (which was normally crap).

Only at the later stages did I hire someone who was relatively on my level.

Not too fussed about that, I enjoyed Dirt enough without it. :) Just want a good SP racing game. :D

Do you think my comments are fair though? You can either worry about the 'RPG' stuff or not - its not tacked on or anything, just there if you want it...

EDIT: Hire Aki Watanabe right from the start - damn cheap, seasoned pro, good overall skills and normally places in top 5 - though he seems to like Le Mans as hes always behind me...

EDIT2: Gone off to play :D

Guess so. I don't really think there is an RPG element as such, what you can do with your teammate is extremely limited beyond choosing someone's skills.

What's the drifting like in this? Normally I can't stand it in games. Is it compulsory to continue through the game? Or can you largly skip it? Or is it rediculously easy to just do and then move on?

You have to do several drift races in career, but they are pretty easy. I just used one of the cheapest cars (Toyota something or other) to do the whole lot.

Been meaning to get this for a while as im starting to try and drift on Forza 2 which is quite hard. What's the single player campaigh like, what modes are there?

Its a good game, you have to put the AI on hard though in SP for them to be a challenge. Also your be in for a culture shock when you go to play online ;)
