Tailgating with a 44-tonne lorry

A Czech lorry driver who rammed several drivers in the outside lane of the M1 motorway has been jailed for 15 months. Police said they were amazed no-one was badly hurt in the rush hour incident, between junctions 26 and 33, in August.

One of the cars Labouenek rammed was driven by Sharon Palos, from Derbyshire. Derby Crown Court heard her car was pushed along the outside lane for several minutes before she managed to get out of the way.

Police finally caught up with the lorry in standing traffic near Sheffield. He initially told police that he was a hitch-hiker and had not been behind the wheel at all.

Hitch-hikers, mental!

Anyone with any ounce of a braincell would accelerate away from the lorry with what I assume, a full load.

Were they not checking their rear view?

But still... What an absolute banker.

Or just pull over and let him past. I assume this piece of road where the film was taken is on the approach to a junction. If not I'd wonder if he lorry had a limiter fitted, since tailgating in lane 3 when you can't go over 56mph isn't easy.

Yeah he looked like he was going a bit fast for 56mph. Must have been a bit of a shock to find a lorry was shoving you down a busy motorway though

MPG while being pushed by helpful lorry > MPG on your own.

I wouldn't be complaining :)

I'm sure you'd be ecstatic at having an HGV crumple your rear bumper.

I bet he was just getting pee'd off with the lane hoggers, and had a bit of a "Falling Down" moment :)

Looks very much like a 3 lane motorway to me and he did supposedly keep up this strange behaviour over a half-hour period between junctions 26 and 33 of the M1, so probably not the approach to a junction.

Are 44-tonne lorries allowed in the outside lane of a 3 lane motorway?

Seems to me that the Czech lorry driver was doing what 95% of truckers would love to do, but dare not!

Hopefully Scania chap will turn up soon and tell us weather or not eastern European lorries have limiters.

EU countries apply a lower speed limit for heavy good vehicles (HGVs) and buses/coaches. The majority of countries only apply an overall maximum speed limit for HGVs (generally 80 km/h) and buses (varying between 80 and 100 km/h). By EU-Directive 92/24/EEC and its recent adaptation (2004/11/EEC), speed limiters are compulsory for HGVs of 3.500 kg and more and for buses of 10.000 kg or more. Some countries apply lower HGV and bus speed limits for different road types (e.g. Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom).

Eastern i.e. non EU states may well have different rules & regs, as far as I'm aware, most do have limiters.

Not to mention modern HGV's gearing is optimised to give max torque & fuel efficiency at around 55MPH.

if he wasn't behind the wheel then who was? Santa Claus?

Labouenek initially told police he had not been behind the wheel

This section of the motorway is currently undergoing extensive roadworks as part of the widening project, the hardshoulder is closed, the lanes are narrow and it is a 50 limit with average speed cameras. Still she should have seen the lorry comming and got out of the way.

I'd have charged him with attempted murder and banged him up for ten years, his behaviour defies explanation.

He wasn't just tailgating, he was actually touching/pushing the car, I don't think trying to move out of the way would have ended well.

Its all well and good saying that. But you really dont expect a 44 ton lorry to keep going until it hits your car. If she was in a spec area with a 50mph limit she will have thought yeah this guy will tailgate me abit.. but not ram her! lol

It really annoys me on the M25, in the 50mph specs when a lorry sits 1ft off your bumper! The traffic is normally busy so you can't go any faster than the massive queue of cars in front

I am not saying that Truckers who sit on your bumper are correct - they are not - but, the reason why they catch you up on Specs stretches of road is simply due to their speedo being calibrated to read accurately which itself is something required by law for tachographs.

I.e. Car speedo reads 50MPH but the car is actually doing approx 46MPH, when an HGV's speedo reads 50, generally, its doing 50. :)
