Hey,

Anyone been to Dubai? Other than shopping what is there to do? I'm thinking of stopping over on the way to Thailand but all the info I can find at my usual sources is shopping and big hotels.

Is there anything special worth going for?

Thanks

Wild Wadi water park, there's a gold souk although I found it very boring. Theres lots of shopping, a gadget street which I cant remember the name of. Not a lot else to do other then shopping and eating good cheap food.

You should definitely look around though, it's an amazing place and you'll see just about every supercar you can imagine. It's the only non-western country I would actually reside in.

Also If you can go on a desert safari, they are intense, mine lasted all day though we got to sandboard, roll the land cruiser over and then eat kebabs at the end of the day.

Shopping, great beaches, fantastic weather ( too hot in summer ) , water park is good, also Desert Jeep thing good fun, hotels superb

not a huge amount of culture, eating/drinking in hotels very expensive

I've heard that sex on the beach there is to die for

:D

I don't like the idea of going anywhere where law is governed by religion rather than common sense. It is bad enough here.

But driving over sand dunes and staying in a hotel in the sea would be ace. I have to admit it looks cool.

From looking at peoples holiday snaps it seems to be a sight seeing trip really. Just big tacky hotels with little content.

I've never actually been myself.. but the place does look great and pretty creative... might be worth looking up at some point from wherever you are.. I'm sure that you will see that giantic tower they have built...

I went in June/July this year, and posted some pictures up when I got back...

Id seriously try to spend a night in one of the Jumeirah hotels as they are pure luxury.
As suggested above, Id seriously look into going on one of the desert 4x4 excursions. Was one of the best nights Ive ever had. One of the 4x4 drivers was telling us they get lots of celebrities going on that excursion.

Heh I came in this thread purely to say something about that ;D

However, while I'm here - You could try getting into that hotel with the tennis court on top :D I heard you actually have the pay to get inside the hotel!

The tennis court was just for that advert. Its only a full time Helipad!:p

Pretty sure you don't have to pay, but they can turn you away at the gate. I got in because I was staying at the resort and even then we had to arrange a time & date!

I'm in dubai right now :D

No reason not to stop if you can. Grab the TimeOut guide for a bunch of awesome excursions. Atlantis is open now which is awesome, Dubai Mall has a nice aquarium, quad biking and dune buggying in the desert is fun (unless you do what i did. i'll post pics at some point).

It's a tennis court when it's not in use as a helipad, and you do have to pay if you're not a guest at the resort ;)

Awww that's disappointing to hear :p I was hoping when I'm rich and famous that I'd be able to play a bit of tennis up there :D

I assume he is talking of the Burj, when I stayed at Jumeirah beach we could go in for free, you have to go to a reception centre and they pick you up in a golf buggy, well when I say reception centre it's more of a chav screening centre :p

Yeah they do Afternoon Tea At The Burj and stuff which you can book and cost's a small GDP.

You cant just go into the Burj al Arab, you have to be going there for a reason for like lunch or whatever. You DO pay to get in, but you pretty much make it back over lunch or drinks or whatever you're doing there. I'm not sure of the price though.

Edit: yeah rotty, Jumeirah beach (the Wave shaped one at the end of the causeway?) and the Burj are part of the same resort as you probably know. I've not actually been in myself, but my sister has. She lives out here, she's been in a couple of times for business eetings and stuff.

Ah right, see when I went in it was for a cocktail/snack party kind of thing on the 18th floor. My friends parents were staying in the Burj so that will be why we didn't have to pay anything. We stayed in the Al Qasr which is also on the same resort. Lovely resort, you should check it out while your there. Whats the weather like this time of the year? Was far too hot in June, in the 40's everyday.

my parents are going this summer with friends and was only last week my dad was saying...ive spent 4 grand, what the hell is there to do there  LoL

Glorify theme park for people with too much money, no sense and dare i say it, no taste.

If you want good shopping, go to NYC, Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Paris, Barcelona, or any capital city.
If you want skiing, go to the alps.
If you want Culture, go anywhere but a desert, Dubai is just a giant construction site, 20 years ago it was a desert.
If you want nice weather, go to the Caribbean.
If you want good water sports, throw and dart at a globe and you can probably find a place that can offer the same with more things to do out of the water too.
If you want to have sex with your girlfriend without getting put in jail, don't go to Dubai.
