4870x2 over a 280 gtx anyday, plus you can always add a second 4870x2 for mindblowing power if you need it in the future - or could wait for the new gtx 295
"wait for the new cards!!!11"
Most useless piece of advice ever, unless of course you're anally retentive and enjoy spending weeks and weeks agonizing over which GPU to buy. "Wait for the new cards" is also perfect for your anal retentive as it allows him to retain his money for longer.

i had the option of a 4870 X2 or GTX280 and got the GTX.
1 reason is the very poor minimum frame rates in a lot of games, it ok having the biggest maximum frames but if it drops from say 120fps to 11fps then back upto average of say 32fps its going to do my head in, hense my decision.

Look at the newest reviews on minimum frame rates and then you will find that the x2 wins this battle pretty easy. In some the x2 minimum is around the gtx280 average. This keeps on being repeated about the x2 having bad minimum frames but its just not true on the latest drivers. The below review was a preview of the gtx295 and the games picked are mainly games nvidia do well in. All graphs show you the minimum frames of each card. The gtx280 loses out on most of the minimum frames battle and some by a very large margin.
