So what are your throughts guys? Thinking of running with Kaspersky.

My criteria are:
  1. That it's not too intrusive. (Though I appreciate this will probably be achieved through settings).
  2. That it's not too resource heavy (one machine it will be installed on is quite aged).
  3. Offers a good level of detection (as far as AVs go).
  4. That it isn't insanely priced (though they all seem pretty similarly priced aside from the free ones).

Thanks :)

Do a search, this type of thread comes up every other day.

Kaspersky or Nod32 will be the top two. You can't go wrong with either. Also if you have a Barclays bank account you get Kaspersky free.

NOD32 - small footprint, and the only intrusion you ever get if your system is clean is a tiny box saying the definitions have been updated.

OP: Avira Antivir is pretty much as good as anything out there and it's.......free.

Oh, and why the hell isn't there a sticky: ANTIVIRUS RELATED THREAD or something along those lines.

Get out of this thread with your Norton crap. No Seriously.

That's OK, I'm going to assume that you just don't know much about NAV2009.

So, here are a few articles worth reading:

AV-Comparatives Nov 2008 - Advanced+ rating: http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2008_08.php

Geek.com review: "This is to say that the Norton team got a product that I had completely written off and made it into something that I would not only recommend, but one that I would consider using instead of a free alternative."
http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/review-norton-antivirus-2009-20081215/

CNET.com review:
"Norton AntiVirus 2009 hits all the right performance notes and its award-winning protection technologies should start to win back even jaded anti-Symantec folks."
http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-se...s-2009/4505-3667_7-33246574.html?tag=txt;page

I'll also throw in: http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02

Currently, on my computer, NAV is using 7Mb of RAM. It doesn't install crap all over the system, it doesn't put useless icons into the task tray and it doesn't thrash the hard drive. There are two processes running, one for the engine and one for a GUI.

I don't want to appear to be all 'fanboy' over the issue, and I'll agree that all previous Symantec built Norton products were gash, but this time round they have got it right and deserve to be looked at again.

Before you write it off, try it on a VM box and see for yourself. :)

At the end of the day I paid £9 for a years licence.

The thing that strikes me whenever I look at any of the test results at Vbulletin and AV comparatives is just how well Avast, and in particular AntiVir, fare against the payware opposition.

Antivir comprehensively outguns NOD and Kaspersky [and Norton!] in almost all areas, and it uses very little in the way of resources. Needless to say, I'm using it!

Yes, I would say Avira is an excellent AV product. I did try it before making my choice but I didn't like the interface :D (I know, that's a daft thing to dislike)

The only thing with Antivir is theres no email protection, well not that I saw when I briefly used it.

I'd have to say NOD as I tried the trial and found it excellent, it removed a virus that avast/avg wouldn't.

Using Barclay's Kaspersky offer right now on two machines. Lovely, light, when you set up the trusted applications ok it's very quiet too. I rated Antivir premium internet suite just as much in terms of use, though Kaspersky has slightly more and is apparently better.
