Canon 40d some info please !!

A local shop had a 40d for sale with lense . Now not 100% sure what the lense is but it is a canon IS and im sure it said 18-85 (i can recheck tomorrow) It also has a 2gb card .

Now there is no charger/leads/manual/box just camera/lense/strap/mem card and its priced at 650 which even i think is way to much . But he has offered 30% off which makes it about £450 .

Anyone think its worth the 450 (depending on lense ) or should i look for further discounts due to missing bits? Had a quick google and body prices are around £550-600 .

Also can anyone tell me how to check how many shots its taken and what to look for as far as damage/faults etc ?

I think with cash in hand i can get him down to 400ish maybe a little less . And im comming from a Panny Fz20 bridge camera .

when you say a local shop, do you mean a camera shop?

would they offer you any warranty with it
how old is it?

overall if you get it for £400 id say that it a good deal (depending on what lens is on it) and assuming its in good condition.

you would only need a charger....
 
sounds a little dodgy to me. camera with lens memory but no charger or anything that is normally left at home? get the serial and check with your local police.

not trying to put you off just dont want you to get stung.
 
Must admit ...first thing that sprung to mind.. But they do have quite stringent rules for buying stuff... But i admit it seemed a little weird to sell something of that value and not have the basic stuff .

It is one of the second hand type stores where people sell them stuff for 10th of the value to get there fix/rent/carlsberg etc heheh .

Will speak to the manager tomorrow .

40D with kit lens (17-85 IS) is about £750 new. You can get a battery and charger for <£50 from China so it sounds like a fairly good deal. Check it's not knocked off first though as already said.
 
Well spoke to them today and they agreed on £400 but i still think its abit much . Also the lense is a 17-55 . Will have a think over xmas then decide but with having no charger i cant try it before i buy which is kinda putting me off.

If it really is the 17-55, then that lens alone is worth over £600 new, so I would say, if you are happy it is not knocked off then it is an absolute steal at £400 for the body and lens.

The other missing bits can be had for around £40 total.
 
as stated if it comes with that lens then its steal! (excuse the pun) but do make sure all is legit first!
 
I'd smell a rat. No one knocks off £200 for no reason AND includes a £600-800 lens, unless they're clueless.

As said, run the serial no. past the police or even Canon.
 
Always been wondering what is the risk involved when buying a stolen DSLR? Does it prevent you from buying insurance for it?
 
if its found to be stolen the police will collect it from you and you will be out of pocket - end of. If you knew it was stolen and continued to use it, they may take it further.
 
is this specific to cameras? i know someone stole out cement mixer, and it had a bright orange power lead that we fitted. we spotted it in another building site, and told them, then the police, and the police said they couldn't do anything becuase they had a "receipt" so it's not their fault.

i don't think it's illegal to not check something's stolen before buying it.

It is an IS but as for wether its a 2.8 i have no idea .

The reason why they may be selling it with a decent lense is its a pawn shop ... Not really the best of knowledge .
Also i did find out they have had it for 6 months ... Guy defaulted on loan secured on it and now for sale ... he never supplies the charger etc as i think he expected it back .

Will go check the lens when they reopen .
