hello

Basically, i need a card that can comfortably handle all of the games available now and for the next year or two with all settings maxed and everything on (excluding crysis)

now one half is telling me get the gtx260-216, and one half is telling me me to get the 4850.

seeing as tho i dont play at a very high res, i suppose the quesion is, is the 4850 enough enough? i would happily spend more on a gtx260, but only if its necessary.

thanks

a 9800/4850 would easily max out all games at 1280.. I think a monitor upgrade would be a more sensible purchase than a >260

You've already got an 8800GT according to your sig - more than enough for all games (usual "bar Crysis" here) at that resolution.

As uvmain says, monitor upgrade is what you want. *Then* start thinking about new cards.

(My old 8800GTS640 ran most games at 1920x1200 without too many issues - and most settings on highest (not huge amounts of AA though obviously).

Im using a 4850 at 1280x1024, and i can't tell much of a diff from it and my old 8800 GT from what i can remember. :)

I went to the 4850 after using a 320mb GTS for a few months (as i downgraded from my GT due to not using it much, and i still had the GTS).

Hmm i have a 4870 1gb playing in 1280 by 1024 .. will i see a huge improvement with 1650 x 1280 ??

In image quality and ease of use in terms of extra desktop space, yes.

Better framerates? Obviously not, but you won't take much of a hit at all. Perhaps you'll have to turn off that 24XCFAA though.

4850 is plenty....why not upgrade your monitor though instead? 1280x1024 is poo

1280x1024 is great, cos your system lasts longer, so a 4850 should last a good 1-2yrs before things start to chug, A 8800gt is roughly the min spec card if you want all games running nice and smooth at med to high detail

I'd upgrade the screen to be honest :p

I've got a ATI 4670 and it runs all the games I play at the moment fine at 1920x1200, can't see why you'd need anything faster for only 1280x1024, it's about half the res.

But I agree theres no point gett the top of the range card, cos like I said a 4850 will last you over a year easy at 1280x1024.

I bought a 3870 last jan and all games still run great on med to high detail, evern the crysis games. Thats at 1280x1024 btw.

I got a 22" samsung to replace my old dell 17" screen this time last year. Best thing I've ever bought for my computer. The difference is so immense, people can say what they want about the difference between cpus or gpus but going from 1280x1024 17" to 1680x1050 22" was mindblowing, so much room on the screen, so much more immersion in everything.

I love it and have never regretted buying it even though im now a poor student again.
