Saw the PS3 round a friends the other night and it looked great! Bought a Wii earlier this year but don't use it much. So, I'm thinking about getting a PS3. Or should I go for an Xbox 360? A cursory scan on the net suggests that the Xbox 360 is really noisy. Is this still true? Is the PS3 really quiet?

What should I go for and why?

Thanks,

Jon

Just a word of warning, this thread may get locked as "PS3 verses Xbox 360" type threads tend to get quite heated.

Anyway to answer your question yes the PS3 is very very quiet, I have an Elite and a PS3 40GB, and my PS3 barely hums even after it's been on hours, mind you the Elite isn't that bad now that you can install games to the HDD, it depends on how much you think it'll bother you.

Woh, lol.

A thread with a timer before kaboom.

There was a full comparison completely unbias written by someone on the forum, Unfortunately it never got stickied, and it seems to have disappeared into the ether.

360's vary in noise ranges, and can be loud, but can also be quite quiet, With the added feature of copying games to the Hard disk and cutting out the DVD noise, They can be even quieter.

PS3s are very quiet, And i've never noticed them becoming half as loud as some 360s,

Both games catalogue are excellent, but which ever console you choose you will be missing some fantastic games that are exclusive to the alternative console.

Bluray is a plus for ps3, if you're a movie fan.

I would personally go to a game website, Browse through each consoles game catalogue and choose the one with more games you want. Rather than looking at hardware flaws.

I'm not really looking for volume of games. Just a select few like Fifa 09, Call of Duty etc. The noise issue is something that would bug me though.

Another thing, is I like the fact that I can play avi files. Can both consoles play MPEG-4, swf, divx, wmv, mp3?

Then it looks like a PS3 is what you want. Its more of a all in one media device than a gaming machine.

Can you turn off the Xbox 360 the same way you can with the PS3? Never played on an Xbox but the PS3 looked VERY impressive when i saw it, the interface etc.

Sorry to post this again, just thought it may help.

Con's

1) Multi-platform titles as a whole tend to be of lessor quality on the PS3.

2) The system is more expensive than it's competitors.

10) Larger library of downloadable games & content.

11) Controllers supported on the PC.

12) XNE Update which includes cool avatars, a unique party system and the ability to play your game from your HDD)

13) Tight regulation & monitoring of Live on-line gaming to negate hacks and on-line abuse.

Con's

1) Substandard build quality that has lead the system to have a poor failure rate.

2) Large external power brick.

3) Many People report that the system is quite noisy. (Optical drive, Internal fans & sometimes even the power brick)

4) Lack of built in wireless functionality which both Sony and Nintendo chose to include in their current gen systems as standard.

Indeed

To the Op:

Only you can decide which is the better console for you. You need to look at what games interest you on each console, consider certain things such as, will you use the blueray capabilities of the PS3 or would it be wasted on you?

Take these into consideration:

1. What console do your mates predominately have?
2. What console has the exclusives that interest you the most?
3. Will the console be used primarily for games, movies or a mixture of most?

Then decide.

Oh and Xbox 360 has Gears of War/Halo 3...which ones do the PS3 have? Little Big Planet and what else? :)

Edit: This sounds like a dig on PS3...i honestly don't know which have exclusive games. :o

Yeah you can do that on the XBOX as well.

PS3 has Metal Gear Solid 4 and I think Final Fantasy as well.

Noob stuff! :p :D

First question: Yeah, all of the current consoles can be switched on and off using just the controller

Second question: The biggest competitor to Halo3/Gears2 at present would be Resistance 2. Obviously whether people thinks it's as good as those titles is a matter of opinion but i think it's a brilliant shooter. Other decent exclusives on the PS3 would include Uncharted: Drakes Fortune which is a mix of tomb raider and gears of war, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, an arcade racer and Metal Gear Solid 4.
