The cold wind of the downturn that has been blowing though Silicon Valley finally reached the doors of the world's biggest internet search engine yesterday when Google cancelled its staff Christmas cash bonus.
This year, instead of the usual $1,000 present to plump up the festive pay cheque, Google is giving all its employees a version of the G1, the mobile phone it released this year to compete with Apple's iPhone.
In an internal e-mail, the company told staff: “The holiday bonus is a Google tradition - it's a great way to thank everyone for their hard work. In the past, we've done this in cash. This year, we've decided to give Googlers a different kind of present - a Dream phone.”

What with all money trouble and stuff going on at the moment I'm sure there's many employees who wouldn't be satisfied with this. Question is, would you?

People need to stop becoming dependant on their bonus. Too many times I've seen people include their bonus into their budget.

One of my staff struggled to pay his council tax this year because we weren't paid our bonus. We didn't get given a phone either. Something is better than nothing.

We didn't get a bonus at all this year, but then, who cares!

Its just that, those staff that wanted to went on the xmas party/trip and some of us had to work so had £10 for a takeaway! Can't complain about it as they don't have to give you anything!

Seeing as I am considering getting the G1 in the new year I wouldn't of minded that :D

That sucks considering that the Google employees I know have already had the chance to pick up a G1 for free (and passed on the offer).

Yup, I'd be happy with it. If I really needed the money I'd sell it off.

They're working at Google, I'm pretty sure most of them are well paid anyway.

Except I highly doubt Google pay $400 for each and every G1 they gave out. Having said that, they probably work in one of the top companies to work for when it comes to day-to-day benefits and least they got something so I wouldn't complain.

No, they don't. It's worth $400 to the person who receives it though, it can be sold off for $400.

The clue is indeed in the name - bonus.

Like most people have said, phone is better than nothing - whether the big G pays for the airtime is another thing ;)

I see people depending on bonuses for living on which is sad to see, I am lucky enough to treat any bonus as a bit of spare cash which goes either towards a better holiday for the kids or saved up for Christmas.

I would prefer the money. They give you a contract phone whereby you need to pay more money out of your salary each month to use the phone.

Pretty sure the G1 isn't worth $1000.

A bonus is a bonus, it's called a bonus because it's not part of your normal salary. It's an added thing to say "well done".

People who depend on it to pay for things are just plain crazy.

The way I see it is Google have still given people something to say thanks for the effort.

Big whoop.

You can't afford your mortgage this month because you didn't get your bonus? Well your a moron for depending on it being there to begin with.

Be grateful you've got something, because an awful lot of companies don't give out bonuses.
