Grand Theft Auto 4

Anyone got any tips for "Catch The Wave" (fairly late on in the game)?

I've tried every strategy possible to get Phil Bell through the boathouse but it either ends up with him getting killed or myself. There are multiple antagonists at various heights and I'm half convinced some are respawning or impervious to damage. They are nearly all armed with assault rifles so your armour is gone in seconds. The usual "cover, clear, advance" doesn't work as at some point the guy you're protecting just cuts and runs and you *must* follow so either he gets shot down or you do.

After all that there is (apparently, according to the Brady Guide) a boat chase still to come.

What makes it even more frustrating is a long drive involving two vehicles from the point where you collect the mission to where you start. The "Replay Mission" feature is all very well but it should put you back at the start of the action with your original armour & weapons etc.

This is the first mission I have really got stuck on so I guess it's not too bad, but if anyone can help - all offers welcome.

Took me just two attempts, first time I didn't realise Bell was suddenly going to bolt off to the rear of the boat yard, so he ended up being killed.

Second time I used the truck to kill the 2-3 guys out the front, then for the first few bad guys used the truck for cover, then moved to the doors for cover closer to the action. Then it was just headshot after headshot until Bell bolted at which point I quickly followed to provide backup. You then have to get in a boat and Bell gets in another one, but I know for a fact there were still people I hadn't killed because I had to run and backup Bell before he ruined it again.

The boat chase it easy and quite short, just a couple of guys and a couple of boat, easy.

I can't get into GTA IV tonight.. it tries to update Rockstar Games Social Club and then tells me it needs to close it.. and it won't run the game!!

Steam :(

Don't know if its already been posted (apologies if it has, but im not checking over a hundred pages :p), but this could be the first proper GTAIV review.

I can't agree with that tbh.
If R* would have made the current low settings ''high'' ( along with limiting the view distance, traffic, etc at around 20 and saying that is 100) nobody would complain, the game would run fine maxed and modders would later make mods for the view distance, detail distance, traffic, etcetcetc... Nobody would complain that the mod with increased settings would mess performance up, they'd just accept it. People imo need to accept not to run the game maxed, wait a few years when they have GTX480's and HD6780's and intel i8's or i9's, and then crank the settings up.

A simple mistake of adding too much graphics detail settings into the game cost them a lot of sales. As long as the game had the detail of the console versions and any higher settings locked (and hidden/kept silent to the public) reviews like the one above would never exist, people wouldn't moan ''omg my 1337 rig can't run this game maxed OMGWTF''. Eventually a smart modder would find the better gfx and enable them for the future...

Just my view on the game, I personally don't see the problem, I can play the game with 35+ fps at all times ( avg 45 ish) with most settings on medium/half of max and with most on low but still native res etc I get constant 60fps...

You mean the grey things you see on the ground for a sec when you turn around the view sometimes? Or something else. The ground texture corruption is the way the engine loads a new area of the map I think, I'm not sure. Haven't noticed anything else though.

Nope like weird textures sticking out of the ground like a spear, also once a car drove towards me and as it drove, black arcs of weird textures span around in time with the wheels

Funnily enough...nailed it first time last night. I think the mission brief is a bit misleading as it implies you must kill all the Russians whereas in fact you only need to kill enough to get through the boathouse. I had thought about putting a bomb on the truck and detonating it in the boathouse (from a safe distance) but my Packie "Like" stat isn't high enough.

Never had it myself as a fellow nvidia user.

I found that mission quite easy - I almost did it the first time but failed because I managed to flip the boat over on a rock near the end - don't ask! The second time I drove (sailed?) more carefully.

I wonder how many GTAIV players with major problems also had the same with Farcry2?
Did FC2 run well for you & you do find that GT4 does as well? I am with the latter, no real problems at all apart from an occasional BSOD which I now get on FC2 so I am putting this down to having to use SP3 for XP as I don't recall getting a BSOD since I reformatted the hardrive 12 months ago.

God I hate flippin, and it's usually right near the end. Flippin' boats, flippin's trucks, flippin' cars! :p

Now that would have been really frustrating...

Reckon by the Brady guide I'm only @8 missions from the end now, plus a few side activities to tie up and get my % complete into the high 80's.

Does anyone else have problems with no sound apart from radio stations and cutscenes? I just installed it, installed the patch and that's all I'm hearing.
