It's only needed if you want to grab a full album, if you are just picking individual songs it's not required. Once you've got the files they are just Mp3 tracks and can be copied/shifted/played anywhere you want, as stated it's DRM free.

Installer just downloads the tracks and can automatically add them to itunes or WMP. Does nothing else that I can see.
