4850 fan stops spinning

I've bought an HIS 4850 ICEQ Pro from here and had nothing but aggro with it. I've sent it back for RMA only for it to be returned and told it works perfectly.

Before I try to send it back for a 2nd time can someone please confirm wether this is normal or not?

I haven't even got as far as installing windows with this card yet as the montir keeps going into standby mode and won't come back on. This happens wether connected using DVI or HDMI to my DELL monitor and obviously makes installing windows impossible as the only way to get the monitor back on is to reboot the PC...

The fan on the card spins up and then just stops, sometimes it will spin back up, other times it won't and the monitor goes off. The heat coming from the card is silly, it's getting very warm indeed and that's just in the BIOS with the case open!!

Do these cards throttle down and stop the fan spinning altogether or is this card faulty as I first said it was??

Thanks for any input :)

Tried with Enermax noisetaker 600w PSU in both ASUS P5K Deluxe and ASROCK 4CoreDual and the card won't even post (get message saying no power connector plugged into card even though there is) so I sent i back to OcUK and they sent it back saying it works perfectly. Even though it smells like something has burnt out on it!

So I've got a new Antec Earthwatts 500w PSU and it will now post in the P5K (but not the ASROCK) but now this problem.

So that's 2 mobo's and 2 PSU's.... and the card is very hot and smells like it

sounds messed up to me....if I were in your shoes I would just ask for a swap if they were so sure it wasn't faulty.

Right if it's not normal for the fan to stop spinning then it's faulty.... I don't understand how they've run 20 loops of 3d Mark Vantage as they claimed with a card thats' fan stops spinning. No wonder it smells like it's been cooking! :p

As advised try the card in another machine and if the same occurs then you know its the card. If the rest of the machine posts after boot up and then the monitor goes into standby then your video card is at least part of the problem. Don't know what to make of the other info you gave though. Hope all is sorted soon.

I don't know anyone else with a PC capable of taking this card, it's a big beast, draws lots of power and only really suitable for a gaming rig.

I only have these two motherboards and it won't fire up at all in the older ASROCK, would probably need a BIOS update to work but I doubt they'd ever release one considering it's age.

it don't draw lots of power.. the card would work on a 400w psu, even a good 350w psu. "only really suitable for a gaming rig." who told u that? thats crap.

Not really sure why you're taking that attitude

It won't run on anyone's PC that I know, ok?
im not taking that attitude mate.

im just pointing out what your saying it draw lots power and only really suitable for a gaming rig, which isn't true really. ok?

if it draw lots power everybody will need a 600w+ psu... and i know for a fact that isn't the case, as i know people run a 4850 on a 350w-400w psu.

Most average PC's have either onboard graphics or similar and **** poor generic PSU's that would blow a fuse if you installed more than 2 hard drives. You'll be lucky if they even have a PCI-E slot.

They're built for web browsing and using MS Office, etc.

A 4850 is one of the fastest graphics cards available today and needs a fairly recent motherboard, flashed with lastest BIOS and drivers and a good quality PSU.... or a gaming type rig in other words?? ;)

Anyway... merry xmas :D

see my psu in my sig. its unbranded which cost me £60, i've had it for 9-11months, i've not had a single problem.

if a pc have a onboard graphic it can easyly be turned off.. it doesn't mean your going to keep it in that pc, your only going to have it in another pc for 5min. does it really matter if the pc is built for web browsing and using MS Office? if the system as a pci-e and a 400w+ psu then i would try it if it was me.:D

I had one of these in my machine for a while. Ran ok on a 2 year old asus PCI-E 1 slot and a jeantech cheap 350w PSU with no issues.

sounds to me more like its not sitting in your pci slot properly. had this few times with mine.might be little warn or case is slightly out.

What's the chances of me not getting it to sit in the slot properly 3x times though? My motherboard is X-fire compatable so has 2 slots and it does the same thing in both slots.

i did it twenty times about 3 or 4 days ago and ive changed 100s of cards :p

exact same card.same problem.im now typing with this pc.

like ive said in other post you put if your case is slightly out it could look like its in perfect but infact it could be slightly not sitting right slightly not touching contacts needed for the picture on monitor.
