"Like anyone else, we can't get enough video formats -- not -- but unlike H.264, DivX, XviD and MPEG-2 the latest rage is Matroska (aka MKV) is not a codec, but a container. It is the format which holds other formats, so you should be wondering, what's so special about it? It is special because it can hold new combinations of codecs and it is open for anyone to use. The most popular new feature is its ability to contain x.264 video, DTS audio, and at the same time subtitles in multiple languages, all in the same file. It is quickly becoming the replacement for AVI...."

tbh i dont care either way - takes seconds to pass through mkv2vob, and you get a PS3 comnpatible file. Be easier without that step, but whats a few clicks?

Mkv2vob gives me problems with DTS audio conversion, sound cuts out and crackles. I'd like to see mkv natively supported on ps3

Takes about 9 hours to convert a 1080p mkv to vob. 720p videos tend not to require encoding which results in them taking a few minutes rather than hours.

Most rips and things you find on the web now are 1080p level 4.1 which is the same level as on the blu-ray standard.

This means easy remuxing so it takes me a few mins to convert it to a playable ps3 format.

Really? Cool! The last one I got was the matrix and it was a hd-dvd rip, so that was probably why.

Loving these recent .mkv releases, playing directly from my laptop, from the HDMI port on laptop into my AV amp, straight through to my 5090 Pioneer.

VLC Player is what I'm using.
