what sort of settings/fps will i be able to run the following games at :

-COD4
-COD5
-GRiD
-Dead Space
-FarCry2

@ 1900x1080 on my pc in sig?. Considering getting a bargain 23" monitor with that res but i'm slightly worried about performance .. and that it'll lead onto a GTX280 or of the like :P.

Also i assume if i don't run games at the full 1900x1080 if i ran them at a lower res it'd still look fine? I'm on a 19" 1440x900 monitor atm.

THanks for your help :)

with the 8800GTS 320mb, you're gonna struggle with pretty much everything except COD4 at 1920x1080. Consider getting a GTX260 or something similar, and you'll be amazed at the performance difference.

Also, you said you're on a 19" monitor. You cant run 1920x1080 on a 19" monitor......

I have a 4850 which is slightly faster than your card i think, and the only game i can comment on first hand is Far Cry 2. Performance is generally OK with 4xaa at high settings, but it can vary wildly. I think having only 2gb of ram might be partially to blame but i can't be sure. From what i have seen/heard Dead Space is not a very demanding game (there are quite a number of videos on YouTube) so you could be fine there.

I don't like playing games at non native res on my 23", everything just looks blurry and crap imo, but it just depends on personal preference. You might find that it's acceptable.

For what it's worth i am planning to upgrade when the next generation of cards come out (provided the economy hasn't gone into complete meltdown). My 4850 should just about cope until then even if i can't max everything out, but 1920x1080 is definately quite a demanding res.

Depends on your settings in the games. They will definitely need tweaking, as my GTS struggles at 1680x1050 in grid at med/high (30fps w/few slowdowns). I don't play any of the other games, but I imagine COD4 will be ok at that res with high settings.

You can reduce the resolution, but expect the scaling to look a bit shabby. Even on the best flat panels you lose the clarity and sharpness you'd expect at native res.

I'd reccommend an upgrade to a GTX260 if you want them to be smooth with nice details at that res. I'm waiting for the new cards to see if the price changes, then i'll be buying one!

Considering getting a bargain 23" monitor

Cheers for the responses everyone. Was actually lucky enough to be given my 8800 within the last few weeks, but this monitor deal seems quite tempting :/.

Meant to say also i don't need to run with full aa/af really. normally i might run with 2x or 4x aa but it doesn't bother me massively.

@ alex, any ideas how grid would run on med settings @ 1900x1080 with no aa/af? does it look horrible @ medium?

thanks

That res will bring a GTS 320 to it's knees. You have a great CPU so grab a 260-216 or a 280, I have the latter and every games flys @ 1080p, even Warhead maxed out runs just fine. (no AA mind!)

260-216 or 4870 1gb would be ideal......the GTS 320mb will probably struggle in most games.

You could get by with a 512mb card though not totally ideal.

Just for the record I run GRID with Ultra detail, maxed out with 4xAA @ 1080p with VSYNC 60fps without dropping a frame.

EDIT- Actually under 180.48 drivers I can run 8xAA 1080p MAX detail 60fps vsync. :) 16xQCSAA works at mostly 60fps too but loses a frame or too now and again-- Quality card!!!

I would expect grid to run around 20-25 fps. You can tweak many settings though, so it'd be worth a play. I've found the game still looks very good on medium anyway, nothing to worry about, there doesnt seem to be much visual difference between the settings when compared to crysis or similar.

any thoughts on what will happen with regards to pricings of the 260/280 when the new cards are released? might be able to pick up a 280 or something similar for a more bearable price :P

Lots of people on here would say just buy it now, but I usually err on the side of caution, so i'm waiting. The prices can't get much worse, plus my gaming is bearable atm (can even play GTA4 quite well). I'd imagine an eventual decrease in price as the 55nm harware comes out, but rumour has it that nVidia still has shedloads of 65nm cards to shift first, which cost more to make. To begin, expect the new cards to be more expensive, but as stock reduces of the old stuff, prices should drop. As long as the £ hasn't gone completely to ****.
