It's not about being scared it's a disgusting book in places that is far from suitable for children. If it was a fiction book that just came out it would have warning on it along these lines http://static.flickr.com/226/459228934_241a5755ba.jpg Who would give a book to children that has incest in and talks about killing lots of innocent children, mass murder and things just as bad?
The biggest problem with the bible is how they add stories like Easter and Jesus rising back from the dead. That's not in the old bibles it's a relatively new addition.

I've just dug this out, printed in 1794 so quite young for a bible, it's part of a set, this is vol 1, not sure what version it is though.

No those stories were always in the Bible, I think what you may have meant is that they were not explicitly wrote about whilst Jesus' brother James was still in charge of the church before the bible existed.

No I meant the bible has been modified over the years and bits added and made up. The oldest bibles with the New Testament don't have the new stories. Take the Gospel of Mark is ends after Jesus' disciples discover his empty tomb. "It cuts out the post-resurrection stories," said Juan Garces who was looking at some 1000+ year old bibles.
Bibles from 1000+ years ago are not the same as bibles from today.

I've got a 1950s issue Authorised King James version: no other version is worth even comparing. It's still complete nonsense, but so beautifully translated (and frequently quoted).

the bit about 5000 year about im not sure i think people just assume this.. through going back to oldest records or whatever

i dont find it funny though, i find it really really annoying, so much so that i would 100% agree with killing those people..
but i must say the guys in the vatican who he talked to were very cool, they agreed with science completely, but still bellieve in god, which is fine, but the idiots who come up with random stuff are to be killed without warning

There's a Gideon Bible kicking about my parents place which is technically mine and I suspect they've got another one or two but I don't have any at my flat here. I might purchase one soon if I find one cheap enough.
