1gb or 512mb Ati 4850

Cannot afford 4870. Is it worth spending more for the 1gb version of the 4850? Will it help on games such as GTA IV?

I dont think it does at all unless your playing at a very large resolution, and even then the difference is negligible. As far as I know its because it is bandwidth limited with the same 256bit bus as the 512mb version.

All depends on how much your paying for it. If you can get the 1GB version for £15 / £20 more than the 512mb, you might as well get it, as it can only help performance (although not by much, and provided the memory isn't clocked lower !WATCH OUT FOR THAT!).

Building a HTPC, one that can play games. I can pickup a Saphire 4850 with aftermarket cooler for £119. The problem is once you start adding £8 here and there, you end up £30 over budget.

I was going to get the 4830 at first, but the price is a bit steep for what you get. So I thought about seeing how much the 4850 are. And I found one for £12 more than the cheapest 4830 I could find. Upgrade creep is a terrible thing.

I shall plump for the saphire, it is already an upgrade over the 4830 anyway.

Thanks willy for reminding me that I do actually have a budget. :)
