My VX220 Supercharger Conversion

Courtenay are building the first stage 3 car at the moment, which will have a near identical spec to mine, except I'll probably also have an LSJ sand cast head. In the next couple of weeks I should know what it will produce, hopefully 300bhp+.

I'm hoping it's very uneventful!

I've also got a VX engine stored on a stand at my aunt's house up the road which has 2 big holes in the block just so I can take it apart and play with it...
 
Have you worked out the logistics of the supercharger? If i'm not mistaken, you'd need it pretty close to the cambelt. Have you thought about heat transfer? Will you adjust the current cooling cycle to accomodate for the supercharger? If so, would that require a better water pump that provides the coolant at a higher pressure? If you're up to it, read up Bernoulli's Equation and make your own water pump. It would no doubt be great knowledge for future projects. :)

Im somewhat purplexed why its been mentioned and why higher coolant pressure is a desirable thing?

Maybe you could have a pumpless water pump that relies on a venturi for flow pressure.

Or maybe we should stick with an impellor :D

Getting there ;)

Even the simplest job on the VX becomes a mission involving swearing, cuts everywhere and sore hamstrings, access is such a problem somethimes!
 
I do apologise, I meant to say lower pressure proportional to a higher volumetric flow rate of the coolant resulting in increased heat dissipation at the desired points.

Yes it does. Thing is you wont see those sort of temps and the higher pressure just puts more strain on everything else including the crank hp thats driving the pump. Its about the correct flow rate to allow efficient cooling.

Was out early this morning to try and finish things off, had to faff around with a spacer plate for the 2.2 throttle body where the holes wouldn't line up properly and the bolts needed cutting down. I already have the proper larger throttle body which is an easier fit but Courtenays wanted me to use the smaller one as that's what most people will use for the stage1 kit.

I turned it over on the starter with no spark plugs in to get the oil pressure up which made it make an amusing tooting sound like an organ then eventually put the plugs in and gave it a go. Was left scratching my head for a while as there was no spark but after resetting things with an OBDII connection it started first time :)

It seems to be running pretty nicely and is able to move under its own steam on the drive, but I ran out of time to do much more today.

Now I need to tidy up the wiring, cable tie it down, double check a few bolts, make sure the coolant hose and fuel lines are fully secured away from the belt, bleed the coolant system, replace a wheel arch liner, resecure the battery and change over the wheels to something more appropriate for the current weather.

Then it goes off to Courtenays for final tweaks to the map and a general check over.

Hows the handling now that the supercharger has been installed?

Oh it felt great driving it back into the garage :p

It won't make any difference, the additional weight is really marginal, a couple of kilos at most, the power delivery is instant and the torque curve is even more flat than before.
