My VX220 Supercharger Conversion

Why didn't you just turbo it for more horse power and the sweet noise. 220hp is weak sauce.

A turbo doesn't suit the characteristics of the car, as a drivers can a smooth power delivery is more important. Add to that no one that I know of has turbo'ed that engine, being mid engined and in a confined space heat is always going to be a problem and the fact that Lotus quite clearly think a supercharger is the best option for this car only leads to one conclusion.

It's only staying at 220bhp for testing purposes for a couple of months then the supercharger is being swopped, chargecooler is going on, new rods, cams and head and then I'm looking for 300bhp or maybe a bit more.

Well, just had my first drive of it round the block.

A little hesitant at very slight throttle but I guess that's because it'll take the ECU a while to learn, also a whooshing sound which I guess is the actuator? I've only passengered in supercharged cars before, never driven one so it's a bit new to me.

Taking it quite gingerly as there's a few bits I want to check/tidy up and I need to bleed the coolant system but when the supercharger starts to spin up it feels like you're being electrocuted :p

correct me if im wrong here muncher but doesnt GM use the 2.2 in america with a supercharger as standard?

GM run it as a 2.0 engine with the supercharger in the states. Very similar to the 2.2 we have here which is why it's possible to get the same supercharger on.

Apparently the next generation VX was supposed to have that engine in but it wasn't ready in 2003, hence why the 2.0 turbo was used instead.

I've just been out for a bit of a longer drive...

First thoughts are why the hell have I bought a supercharger that's going to produce 300bhp!!

I didn't really plant my foot that much as I have a set of borderline semi slick track tyres on at the minute and the roads are extremely slippery today, but blimey it doesn't half shift! The throttle response is instant, think I'm going to like this :p

Looks good :) I think people get too hung up on large peak bhp figures when they talk about turbo vs supercharger and fail to look at the actual power/torque curves. SCs are very good for this type of car imo much better than a turbo.

IMO I'd keep it at 220 or so. 300 is just insane ! :p

Nah, it's rude not to take it to 265bhp at least as that only requires a pulley swap and the chargecooler which should only cost me approx £500.

But I want to take the engine out to remove the balancer shafts and fit the lightened flywheel which I already have, not to mention the uprated clutch. Oh and the rods and cams I already have as well.

Hmm, and that dirty great big Harrop TVS supercharger too :p

The supercharged Honda Elises seem to have no problems with 300bhp... Now Steve Guglielmi's time attack car at 520+bhp is a proper example of an insane car!

Nah ignore him tune it for max horse power!!! I think 400bhp is about right in a vx220

Also you need racing body kit.

490bhp per ton? :p

Ferrari Enzo 476.19 bhp/ton
Porsche Carrera GT 436 bhp/ton
Bugatti Veyron 521 bhp/ton

I'll pass on the bodykit for the minute thanks ;)

You may need one just to keep you on the ground!

:p A diffuser may help a little, but to get any meaningful downforce will require a wing which is both big and high, not sure I want that for a little more downforce...

Tidied it up a little bit.

The filter near the header tank will go, as will the crank case breather one. The hose that I cut to put a T piece in from the crank case breather had a bore which is too small so I'll replace that. A black rocker cover will go on as soon as I can figure out how to open it up to get rid of any powdercoating/beadblasting residue.

Needs more chrome and blue pipes. I actually have a friend called Icy J who does chroming, I'm sure he could chrome some stuff at a reasonable price.

Where is the big shiny induction? This car is not bling enough.
