Someone has bought me a Game voucher for Xmas and I was wondering if the PS3 is as good as playing Blue Ray movies for my new Panasonic TH42PZ85B than a dedicated Blur Ray player such as the Panasonic DMPBD35 - Blu-Ray Dvd Player

I was only going to spend £200 on a Blue ray player .

Your advice is apprecaited thx .

if you're not going to play games i'd get the blu-ray player. i've read that the DMPBD35 is equal if not better in some setups than the ps3 and is cheaper too.

I've never understood, why you would buy a BluRay standalone unit, when a PS3 is only a bit more...

I dont play games and own a ps3 and its brill, dvd playback is awsome, blueray playback is awsome, i have all my music on it as well best console ive ever owned.

I was all set to buy a PS3 for playing films on my new PZ81B, until I saw the new DMP..35 was priced just over 200 quid.

Reviews on the net suggest this is a decent player. It produces good image quality, does onboard decoding for both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and is Profile 2.0 compliant.

You will be able to do more with a PS3, e.g. media streaming etc, but then it does cost more.

Depends how much you want to spend and if you also want to play games.

at one point there was nothing that could compete with the ps3 for quality but times are changing and you can pick up awesome stand alone players

PS3 ADVANTAGES:

* Faster load times
* More flexible... Also a games machine, a web-browser and a media server.
* Maybe less compatability issues: There are very frequent firmware updates for the PS3.
* Enormous user base.
* Won't be superceded any time soon.
* The optional Blu-ray remote is bluetooth: so you don't need to aim for the player when operating (handy in my case).
* No front-panel display to illuminate a darkened room.
* Forced 24p possible.
* Upscaling: Compared to an HQV-equipped player like the Toshiba XE1, it's damn close. I'd be surprised if the DMP-35 is actually any better.

DMP-BD35 ADVANTAGES:

* Slimmer
* Quieter
* Cooler
* FAR less power consumption... only 20 Watts !
* Cheaper
* Audio can be bitstreamed over HDMI for decoding by the receiver.
* Remote control is excellent, with large primary buttons - probably better in the dark.
* Front display is sometimes handy (Hopefully it can be dimmed down or switched off when not wanted).
* SD card slot (especially handy if you have an AVC HD camera like the Canon HF11 )
* Infra-red means no problem with universal remotes

you say that the DMP-BD35 is quieter and cooler. but my ps3 runs cold even after a few hours of play, with hardly any audible noise comming from it. So much to the point that i wouldnt have thought they could be used as pro's for the DMP-BD35 over the ps3.

just my 2cents

To be fair to Mr White, its the guys over at AVF that mentioned the Panasonic ran cooler.

I have read quite a few contradictory posts about the heat and noise levels of the PS3 - the problem is everyone will have different opinions on what is 'hot' and 'noisey'.

unless im sitting a foot away from the ps3 i cant hear it (mayby loud musics catching up with me) the only heat i've found from the ps3 is a litle cluster by the fan at the back. but its only ever slightly warm at best in that one tiny spot.

saying that i cant compare it to the panasonic as i dont have one. just my experience with the playstation

I was in your situation - I bought a panasonic DB35

I have a xbox360 I don't use so why would I want to use it for gaming, I have a media PC for streaming media and laptops for web browsing - so the BD35 won.

It's absolutely superb. I use the media PC to upscale DVD's as they are all on my server anyway so can't really comment on that side of it to be honest.

I really like my ps3 for br movies and you can network it to your pc and stream any video, music and photos to your hd tv too :)

Im considering a PS3 for blu ray but im also thinking why not just buy a stand alone player thats cheaper than a PS3 and save a bit of £ and buy your self a HTPC instead :/

If you where lucky you would save £50 - nowhere near the price of a HTPC (which in my opinion is a constant hastle with configuration/unpdates etc - Windows is never plug and play)

Personally I think the PS3 is still the best BR playback device on the market, so much so I bought a 2nd just before Xmas

The only real advantage I can see for the standalone for most people is the standby power usage

I can't play Vob files or M2TS files from the PS3 hard drive can I?

So say I have a 1 TB hardrive on my pc containing M2TS files and Video TS vob files....

Your saying I can stream this HD content fromn the PC to the PS3 and watch it on my projector?

As a bit of reading has suggested this is BS and it doesn't work.:confused:

yes the ps3 can play hd camcorder files from its disc/drive ie M2TS ive never tried vob files as if ive got it ondvd i use the dvd,, but i think its a no brainer you dont have to use it as a media player but once you start its goes from there, i have mine hooked thru hdmi splitter xbox 360 on other end but only use the ps3 for media easier interface and with it hooked in to surround sound via optical tos cable its pretty damm good and true 1080p with blueray,,,

Because standalone players are probably better now and cheaper.
Agree. My S350 only cost me £143.50 and came with 3 Blu-rays in the box and a further two more after registering. The performance is at least on a par with the PS3 if not better.

I don't see why anyone would spend twice as much on an inferior product unless they wanted to be able to play games as well.
