Sixteen children were left orphaned in the Christmas Eve massacre carried out by a gunman dressed as Santa Claus who slaughtered his ex-wife and her family in Los Angeles, it was reported overnight.

Authorities have yet to formally identify the nine people killed by Bruce Pardo, 45, who opened fire at the home of his former in-laws before setting fire to the house and later taking his own life.

But the devastating impact upon the family of his ex-wife - identified in media reports as Sylvia Ortega - has slowly begun to emerge as grief-stricken friends and associates speak out in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Pardo's rampage is reported to have claimed the lives of his ex-wife, her parents, her two brothers and their partners, and another relative Alice Ortiz and her teenage son.

Sylvia Ortega's three children were at the party but survived, Scott Nord, the family's lawyer, told NBC4 television. "The entire family was wiped out," Nord said. "There's basically like 16 orphans."

I can never understand why a man would wipe out his family just because of a divorce.

It happened in this country were a father killed his children in his car, then the guy who killed his kids in his caravan.

Given that this chap had wired his car to explode, and sprayed homemade and highly volatile accelerant around the house before he set it on fire, I don't think the guns made that much difference, that is of course assuming they were legally owned, something which hasn't been confirmed in the press so far either way.

You're a bad, bad toaster:eek:

I really don't think they will ever change there gun laws out there no matter how many firearm related crimes they have.

The main reason they won't change their laws is because it's pointless, because generally, firearms crimes aren't committed by legally owned guns. Trying to legislate based on the very few statistical outliers that are committed with legally held guns is a very bad idea... Just look at how successful our handgun ban was at reducing our murder rate...

'But it's reduced the rate of shootings!'

Some gun control arguments make no sense. Who cares that shootings have gone down if stabbings have replaced them?

if only one of the other family members had a gun with them, so many people may not have died!

:(

I was aiming more at children managing to get hold of them in the home! All firearms IMO should be kept at a gun/rifle registered club in a heavily secured gun safe!
