Scotland : Friendly?

You my friend, are an idiotic bigot.

Don't believe the hype, Glasgow has a large Asian population and as long as you don't venture into any of the outlying suburbs after dark you'll be okay.

No more chance of being assaulted in Glasgow than anywhere else in the UK.

I think he was just meaning they arent racist, because they will stab you whatever colour you are. So hes replacing one sterotype with another to get his point across that scots arent racist.

lol he will be fine. The UK is far more civilised than you'd imagine.... In china it would perhaps be a problem.

Have a mate whos going there tomorrow with his girlfriend, hes of Asian descent and is a bit worried about Scotland in terms of being british as well as Asian and with a white girlfriend, i know its a weird question but is Scotland as racist as i keep hearing? Hes going to the isle of skii (sp?) and Edinburgh (never been there meself)

ta for replies.. :)

It doesn't matter where you go in the world, you'll always get racism. Not any different from any other part of the UK.

Scottish people are usually always very nice and always willing to help you out.

The Glaswegians will stab you regardless of the colour of your skin.

It's people like you that give Glasgow that name, it's nowhere near as bad as people make out.

They're parts that are very bad just like anywhere else.

People make London to be all that great, but it's just the same.

To be honest, the only thing you'll notice different is the accents. The only "racism" you'll find in my opinion is the jokey attitude towards the English. :) Nobody really means it, it's just across-the-border banter.

I'm British with asian parents living in Scotland and I've never really had any problems - just the usual. You're far more likely to encounter banter between the Scots and English which no one really takes too seriously.

If anything, and I await flaming, there is a greater degree of anti-Scots sentiment in England than the opposite in Scotland, perhaps down to Scotland taking a higher proportion of government spending than England.

Somewhere like Skye will be fine, it's very tourist oriented so the locals are very friendly. It does amaze me when I venture outside the city just how much more welcoming everywhere is, but that is the same anywhere in the UK. Edinburgh also has a high tourist/student population and is very multicultural to say the least.

Just remember that your whisky is only served with more whisky, and your porridge with salt.

Feek - I remember the guy too if that was the night we went for pizza and beer. Braveheart unfortunately encouraged some misplaced lager-fuelled patriotism / nationalism that has no place in a modern Britain (i.e. post-1707).

What! Us Edinburgers are suave, urbane folk. I cannot believe that a fellow citizen would lower himself to such slanderous depravity. Perhaps he was one of those savage weegie immigrants.

Lol.:D Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities, I've been there many times with my wife but we met this guy a few years ago when the buses were on strike. He took us to the shopping mall where the Britannia is moored and during the trip he was telling us all sorts of stories, probably untrue I might add.;)

Um, everyone who is born in Scotland is British...

Most scottish people are alcoholics and this, combined with their very poor diet makes them quite violent at the best of times. I wouldn't risk it tbh.

Ive been all over the country with my lass (asian with a white partner - hell im even a muslim) and ive never had any grief, I even been into some 'bnp heartlands' with pretty much minimal problems.

I take the view that if you treat people as you would expect to be treated yourself then you aint gonna go far wrong in life.Of course we/I dont spend time in dodgy wateringholes to come across the real pee heads.

Anyway Edinburgh is a cracking city, we stayed in Aberdour, which is just across the forth bridge, awesome place with really friendly people imo.

Haw pal, hud yer wheesht. 'ers nowt wrang wi' a deep fried Mars bar, 's a braw feed.

I've actually got no idea whether it is or isn't since I've never felt tempted to eat one but I'm reliably informed it is "surprisingly nice". I'm shocked you didn't mention the preponderance of ginger haired people, that certainly adds to the danger and men wearing skirts too. ;)
