Have a mate whos going there tomorrow with his girlfriend, hes of Asian descent and is a bit worried about Scotland in terms of being british as well as Asian and with a white girlfriend, i know its a weird question but is Scotland as racist as i keep hearing? Hes going to the isle of skii (sp?) and Edinburgh (never been there meself)

ta for replies.. :)

Edinburgh is reasonably multicultural and always friendly whenever i get up there. I have experienced a little anti english feeling is some of the backwaters (Falkirk:rolleyes:)but only after many cold drinks have been consumed.

I think the general rule is the higher up the island you get the friendlier people are....so skye should be good

On an OcUK meet in Edinburgh a couple of years ago, one of the Scottish attendees repeatedly told us how he 'hates the English' which made it interesting. I can't remember his name but that was the only anti-English reaction I've ever had which didn't seem to be made in a jokey manner I've ever received in Scotland.

You'll get pillocks wherever you go in the World and Scotland is no different, hopefully your mate won't run into any of said pillocks but it can and does happy unfortunately. I wouldn't have said that Scotland was any worse than anywhere else though but then I am perhaps marginally biased being both Scottish and white so I'm not as likely to be subjected to abuse for either of those things.

Skye should be quite nice, the scenery up there is spectacular if nothing else and as a general rule I think the people are quite friendly as tourism is a fairly large part of their economy if for no other reason.

//edit that's unfortunate Feek, in fact its downright shameful if he wasn't joking. It can on occasion be difficult to tell because deadpan humour is common but I am absolutely sure you weren't misreading him so I can only apologise for someone like that, he doesn't represent most of the Scots I know - I'll happily take the mick out of the English but only if they're also in on the joke.

Its all down to personal experience, but Scotland is certainly no worse than anywhere else in the UK.

Your mate shouldn't have any problems in Skye, as long as he doesn't go with any prejudged views.

Had a great time in Edinburgh; the people couldn't be friendlier. :)

They get even more chummy if you can prove that you're a Still Game fan, as I am... ;)

*hugs* see we are lovely and friendly up here :)

Aye but he was a ****, you get them everywhere ;) I have seen far less racism up here than when I lived in England. I certainly wouldn't worry about it.

Some Scottish fella he other day took his teeth out and wanted to punch my mate for being a South African. The guy asked my mate what the time is to the next train coming, when he heard the accent he lost it.

Something about taking jobs and his kid having to wait in the emergency room for hours because of us racist, erm - fornicators. My mate through it prudent not to point out the obvious irony :p

Apart from the silly fool in my tale, I have never met a racist Scotsman nor have I felt the target of agression during time spent in the country - quite the oppesite actually :)

all places will be fine except for certain parts of Glasgow where the knuckle draggers hang out , And youll be suprised at how many English folk live up here, especially in Skye so you friend will have no problems

The Glaswegians will stab you regardless of the colour of your skin.

You my friend, are an idiotic bigot.

Don't believe the hype, Glasgow has a large Asian population and as long as you don't venture into any of the outlying suburbs after dark you'll be okay.

No more chance of being assaulted in Glasgow than anywhere else in the UK.

If this is true, surely then it says that knife wielding Glaswegians are at least balanced and non-prejudice in their approach?

Seriously thou, I find the knife/gun crime in London far more worrying.

The most racist person I've ever met in person was a taxi driver in Edinburgh. He was the exception rather than the rule though.;)

What! Us Edinburgers are suave, urbane folk. I cannot believe that a fellow citizen would lower himself to such slanderous depravity. Perhaps he was one of those savage weegie immigrants.

have to agree with others and say that up here is no different than the rest of the uk, we are generally very friendly folk no matter where your from, but as always there is the narrowminded minority.
he will probably find the folk up skye(i assume you mean skye) way are much more reserved yet when you get them going are a lot more welcoming and friendly than people from the central belt, where as edinburgh folk although generally friendly are very much the same as any other city folk and just keep to themselves.
cant see him having any bother.
just steer clear of neds/chavs/junkies! (the stereotype unfortunatly is more often than not true!)

but then i will say dont mistake harmless banter/unrine taking as offensive behaviour. in certain places a thick skin is compulsary:p
