Taxi's on New Years Eve

Taxis as in black cabs should not have the meter started untill you get in the cab, the pull off rates around the country will vary as they are set by local councils which can range from £2 - £5.

I doubt they will, most professional people understand the value of honouring agreed times :) And taxi drivers like to think they are professionals!

You don't take many taxis then!

They don't. everyone thinks there stupidly expensive so they don't get used. meaning lots of taxis about. they where about 1.5x the normal rate last year, which I think is cheap.

Oh dear, quickly close the thread, someone has made a grammatical error.

It's actually a discussion of a grammatical misnomer, and quite an interesting one. Personally, I'd stay on the fence - taxi's is definitely justifiable as an abbreviation, but I'd still prefer to see taxis to avoid confusion.

I thought [TW]Fox might appreciate the correction (if that is what it is to be) as he seems to take a certain amount of pride in his use of English and he has picked up people for their errors before. If I'm wrong and it is correct then I'm interested as I've expanded my knowledge of our lexicon. As it is we appear to have reached no firm conclusion overall.

erm they start on 2-3 quid because thats the minimum charge

then they should have the meter on 0 if you dont reach the minimum fare its obvious what you should pay?
surely minimum fare means thats the minimum the fare will cost not the price it starts at?
i use a local taxi company all the time anyway from my house to town it comes to 2quid :) half the price of black cabs and most other companies

Nope, well not round here. You've got a pre-set charge just for getting in the taxi, say £0.70 per person after 11pm so you have that to pay plus whatever it costs in terms of the trip.

^I'm in agreement with SPW regarding the case; no need for a capital T in "Taxi's" when it's used in the middle of a sentence.

Moving back on topic I'd imagine a pre-booked cab for 19:30 shouldn't be too much trouble, as he's discovered.

Hi guys,

Generally, when do Taxi's begin to get hugely expensive and utterly difficult to get hold of on New Years Eve? Need one at about 19:30 but don't fancy paying £million.

Thnx

Then dont go for a taxi who drives a bmw! Find one with a mondeo! :D

Oh, it's in the post too. I thought he was referring to the thread title.

A bit late in the day now, but my mate who has just become a cabbie phoned me up last night, he said his firm were only on Tariff 2, meaning it cost the same as after 11pm on a normal Saturday night.
