Hi folks,

Trying to help my dad connect his laptop to the tv via an onkyo 606 av receiver. We've managed to get picture but for some reason the laptop, just won't send any sound through the connection

The PC speakers green bar shows activity but the HDMI doesn't, I've tried setting it to the default and I've also tried disabling the Speakers/Headphones. But no joy.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Paul

im pretty sure you need to use the audio out on the laptop for sound ( i think the hdmi carries the video only )

i may be completely wrong :)

Never mind, reread. In this case I think the output only carries video and you need to use a seperate output/sound system. If you run a phono audio out cable from your laptop to the 606, the 606 might allow you to use an analogue audio input with the HDMI video :)

Thats all you have to do. You may have to restart the PC, at least the application making sound anyway (media player) whatever. Depending on your codec setup etc. you might have to enable SPDIF passthrough etc.

The m1330 does output audio over HDMI, as mentioned set HDMI output to default and restart the video application.

I use HDMI with sound on my m1330 so it definitely does carry sound! Careful about misinformation guys. It was a real pain to set up and I can't remember how I did it, I'll check tonight and let you know.

Setting it as the default is really all you need to do, so that its got that green tick on it.

You will need to re-open whatever application your using to make the noise, because programs take 'ownership' of the default audio device on start up (usually).

Once you get the eq thing bouncing away on the properties, that should be it. Try it with several programs winamp/vlc whatever. You might need to enable HDMI audio for the source on your amp depending where it looks first.

Heres mine:

You can right click->test on each device also, if your not sure whats going on with the applications.

What about optical? Is the headphone jack a mini toslink as well?

Sorry to divert the thread, but I've been thinking about an M1330 as there's been a bit of an accident with my Znote. :( What the general consensus on them? I see that large thread at notebookreview but it's 411 pages!! Does that mean that they're a nightmare or just hugely popular or both?

Love my m1330 but then I have done the copper mod (was part of the initial creation/testing group) to avoid overheating the 8400gs. If you want a dedicated GPU look elsewhere otherwise it's an awesome laptop and the LED display is fantastic. 6 hours measured battery life while just browsing the net/word processing too with the 9 cell battery and dedicated GPU (I undervolted my CPU though).

I have an XPS M1330. I installed XP on it the other week.

Hooked it up to a friends 37" Hitachi via a HDMI cable I received from a friend who works for Virgin Media. Audio and Video both worked without a problem.

Yup, what the others said.

Set Digital Out to default for HDMI and set the default back to speakers for when you're not connected.
