Does anyone know why the Toshiba Regza series of TVs don't work with Radeon graphics cards via DVI-HDMI?

Its been discussed on AVforums but thinking there might be more PC literate people here who might have an answer.

I have just ordered the 42" XV555DB and i have a Radeon 3850 which will have to be sold and then an Nvidia card bought if i can't get the TV to work over HDMI with the 3850.

All Nvidia cards work over HDMI on this TV so y the hell does the Radeon cards not work? Sounds impossibly stupid to me.

Any ideas?

What exactly is the problem? Does it simply display no signal? Can the PC recognise a TV is attached?

Obvious things, but try the latest ATI drivers and have a play with the TV settings. Also, sometimes there can be a specific order to attaching HDMI, turning on TV, turning on PC. I have the 37" version of that TV and use it on my Radeon 9800 Pro in my media centre with no problems. In fact, no special setup was required.

Check your cable with something else too.

so u guys just plugged the hdmi cable into the Tosh as u would a VGA cable and it worked as soon as u enabled the secondary monitor?

Sorry Alex, i think this mostly affects the 2xxx to 4xxx range of cards, should have said! Do you have a Radeon card in that range handy you could test with your tv?

Hmmm i might just nip down to Currys tomorrow and pick the damn thing up to see if it works for me and my Rad 3850!

No, sorry, I don't own any newer radeon cards actually! I didn't enable it as a secondary since I use my display as the only one on my HTPC, but it definitely worked fine. The drivers used were the latest cats, i'm pretty sure.

just went and bought the damn thing from John Lewis, got the last one in Glasgow! Picking it up 2moro so fingers crossed it works ok wit the 3850!

Right got the TV 2day, PC works fine over VGA but over HDMI, nothing, nada, zilch!

Piece of **** ATI/Toshiba!

Tried all the usual ways of switching it on, off, using dvi1 then dvi2, latest drivers/CCC etc etc etc.

Doesnt even show the bios boot screen via HDMI so the TV will not work with a Radeon 3850 over HDMI.

Gonna grab my bros PC which has an old 7300GS in it and i bet it works first time!

Looks like i'm gonna have to join the Nvidia boys soon.

Apart from that the TV is excellent for the money, i've tweaked the settings and i'm very happy with the picture. Obviously its not as good as a plasma with blacks but more than acceptable and the with the PC connected via VGA @ 1360x768 the 720p files look as good if not slightly better then my old Samsung LE32R71 which was a top telly 2 years ago.

So i'm very happy with the TV:D, just not with my ATI 3850:mad:.

Is your TV the 1080p model? I have the 37" 1080p and the DVI-HDMI picture I get is fantastic, I was really pleased. Hopefully you can get it to work with the geforce.

Have you tried disabling 'lip-sync' for the HDMI channel you're using. Just out of interest.

EDIT: Just been reading your thread on the other forums, looks like you've probably tried everything. It's probably a basic hardware incompatibility, and you can't do much more about it, perhaps just contact ATI support, but i'm not sure they'd help you much. My advice would be stick the 3850 on an auction site and get a geforce equivalent for the same money. I've always preferred the nvidia drivers over ATI, and they certainly seem better at the moment.

No idea about the lip sync function as i haven't really used the TV much.

Only using HDMI at the moment for the DVD player and all sound gets routed through the AV amp, TV spks only gets used to watch general TV.

The ATI/Tosh thing is probably just a hardware compatibility issue that can't be resolved easily otherwise someone would have cracked it by now.

I connected my bro's PC with a 7300GS and it worked first time so an Nvidia defo works through HDMI no problem at all.

Unfortunately the TV doesn't do 1:1 pixel mapping as i had to resize the desktop to fit when using the HDMI and running 1920x1080 so kind of renders the PC-HDMI connection useless.

I'm well chuffed with the VGA connection so will stick with that for the time being.

I think that thread is more to do with the audio rather than the getting the picture to work but good read none the less.

Cheers

Could it be that you have the wrong version of the DVI->HDMI dongle?
Apparently there are 2 types.

I gave up with my Regza and bought a Panasonic instead, it worked 1st time.

Don't think so.

I bought a DVI-HDMI cabel and a HDMI - HDMI cable just in case. Both made by Plexus so a decent brand. Also tried using the DVI-HDMI dongle included with the ATI gfx card.

My bro's PC with the Nvidia worked 1st time with the same cables!

I think Tosh have secretly done a deal with Nvidia! lol!

I'm quite happy with the VGA connection even tho it has to be scaled, still looks very sharp. If i get really annoyed i'll just get an Nvidia card in a few months time.
