Let Gordon Brown control your speed

Im personally unwary of any device which artificially inhibits the capabilities of your vehicle and not convinced it's entirely safe. Better education of drivers would be a far superior method of making our roads safer, rather than removing their responsibility for controlling the speed of their car.
 
What if some angry guys chase after you with guns and you can't go more than 70...:o
 
Before we do this, how about only selling blunt knives? I have 10 knives in the kitchen capable of killing people, lets ban them!!! And whilst we're at it, let's ban chocolate for making people fat (adding cream cakes, rich food, alcohol, fags), porn, violent movies, dangerous sports and activities - hell, anything remotely fun.

How about Mr Brown ****s off back to Scotland tbh.
 
if it had an on off switch, you could go for a hoon then turn it on and not worry about getting caught speeding on main roads.

right enough, what i basically suggested is cruise control, ah :( perhaps they should give free cruise control units to everybody, that had the option of automatically setting at the speed limit :)
 
Trouble is, no matter how careful a driver you are, you never know when the circumstances might arise which would make it safer to accelerate rapidly* to avoid a potential hazard rather than applying the brakes. Speed limiters or governers would prohibit this unless there was some sort of instant over-ride.

* Chuckles at thought of doing that with the Easytronic transmission on my Corsa. Usually tries to kill me at least twice a week when the computer decides it can stay in third gear from walking pace "accelerating" on to busy roundabout.

I Struggle to think of any given situation where a sudden burst of speed would have helped me with my speed limited HGV (55MPH with my current Scania) - I can think of many a time where reverse is true and the speed limiter has probably, saved me from getting into a situation that ,with excess speed, would have possibly ended in tears.....

Speed limiters are the norm in HGV driving, and guess what? Next to nobody cares about them any more (Compulsory since 1987 iirc) were they introduced in cars, people would soon appreciate the fuel / wear savings and in time will accept them as much as seat belts (anybody recall the horror when they were made Law?)

One of the best features of the DAF XF truck is its variable speed limiter, you can set it from anywhere between approx 20MPH right upto its limit of 55 - 56MPH, its great for those sneaky cameras & speed traps. ;)

If you have any experience of a speed limiter and disagree, fair enough, the rest of you shut up until you try one! :p

I can think of times when that burst of speed would be handy.
Like when trucks decide to pass another one on a dual carriageway (normally uphill) and take forever due to them both doing the same speed. It is usually only the weight difference(if any) that enables a quickish overtake.

Brown can ****-off anyway. I can't stand the fish faced idiot, he has sold the country down the swanny and this is the sort of scheme he would love.
 
In theory I don't think that it's an entirely bad idea, however in practice I reckon it will just lead to everyone driving at the maximum speed everywhere, all the time, regardless of conditions.

You can imagine where it will lead in the future though, next it will be they can adjust the maximum speed of your car on the fly, i.e. bad weather/heavy traffic and the maximum speed drops right down. Before you know it we'll all be driven to work by computers!

The speed difference comes down to the respective settings of each limiter, yes, the type of load in each vehicle, the engine output and, believe it or not, the degree of tyre wear!

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not in agreement with this policy for cars, just saying that actually, its not that big a deal if you drive accordingly (which I grant you, many HGV drivers don't!) and allow for the limiter.

The sooner we can vote out this ******, the better.

Take a look in most modern vehicles, we practically are already! - put it another way, remove the computers from modern vehicles and see how many still run!
