Windows 7 Beta 1 (build 7000) screenshots

Of course it is, it's a maintenence release. It'll be like 2000 is to XP.

Pipped to the post there while I was distracted in mid post.

I can see both sides of the argument with 7. It does look nice but then I dont strive for the best looking OS going - its down to what apps are installed onto it that matters to me. I can also understand the capitalist sentiment though. There would have to be a significant change in the OS other than cosmetics, and whether it really should be a service pack instead of a new OS release.
I sense this Vista/7 timeline is following in the shadows of Windows 2000 Pro which seemed quickly overlooked in favour of XP Pro.
I guess it is going to be another case of how good its uptake is going to be. Then supply and demand kicks in with new training courses and books etc...

Yes very easily as well, right click task bar & select small icons.

Wish they finally make the start logo smaller, so that it doesn't get cut in single line mode :(

Annoys me on vista to have 3/4 of a logo too

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7000 today. Its okay and I'm sure it will get better as its only in beta. But at the moment I prefer Windows Vista.

So how does that new taskbar work?

Have they just stripped the text and made the icons bigger?

Or is it something completely new?
It has big icons in the Quick Launch tray. When a program is launched, its icon is placed next to the Quick Launch area. All windows of each program are displayed under the same icon as that program. You can change that last behavior to the classic version at the Taskbar properties. All the way to the right, there's a button to show the desktop. If you just point to that button with your mouse (without clicking), you can see the desktop through all windows (only the shape of each window is then visible).

But I personally think that the taskbar is a ripoff of the KDE window manager with some elements of the Mac OS X Dock.

Presume you are running this in vmware? (due to the 30 day license limit)
I only ran the installation in VMware to be able to make screenshots (vmware fusion). For all the other screenshots I've installed it on my MBP, because VMware couldn't run Aero, because its 3D driver is not WDDM compatible. I'm not looking for a serial number to activate it, because I'm certain that there will be a newer build within these 30 days.

Decieded to install Windows 7 on my spare system and Im also liking the way how it is. Not may drivers out there yet but Vista drivers worked fine. Gave Fay Cry 2 a try and it works on Windows 7 without any problems

I like Vista, I honestly can't see what all the fuss is about,

Somebody couldn't get it running very well on thier P2 400Mhz so had a quick to the internetz moment then a bunch of other people that had never used it started chipping in with thier bashing as they had no understanding of it.

:p

There's nothing in Windows 7 that couldn't have just been Vista SP2. The only time I'll bother upgrading is if I get a new Windows based laptop as I refuse to shell out £150+ for what's essentially a service pack.

£150? really? Or maybe £50-60 for OEM if we were being a little less sensationalist?

Also I ask you please to make a list of what is new in windows 7 (without the help of google) which leads you to believe "it's just a service pack".

tbh i hate that taskbar style,

i unlocked it so it would like the normal one im used to:

Still double the height of the old one - can you make it look and behave exactly like XP and Vista's taskbar?

If it's just a choice between that or the Windows 'classic' look then I am not getting Windows 7.

Installation of Vista Ultimate on my gaming PC is now almost exactly 2 years old. It currently runs on Q6600 with 4Gb of memory, has handful of video editing utilities installed, some basic neccessities like winrar or office and considerable load of games. Otherwise it's untweaked in any shape or form.

Installation of XP Pro on my work PC is now almost 4 years old. It runs on Dell with old dual Xeon Noconas and 2Gb of PC2700 memory. Over those years it had so many applications and demos installed, reinstalled and uninstalled that Windows directory is over 12Gb in size. For all intents and purposes it should be a mess of epic proportions.

And yet.

In every single aspect, with exception of applications that do pure, raw processing and computations, the XP feels and is faster than Vista on much more powerful setup. It boots quicker, does stuff quicker, doesn't go rumbling and crunching through all drives for hours every time you leave it switched off for a week or two. It doesn't hesitate with startup programs, it doesn't ask for permission to permit asking for permission and generally just feels lighter, swifter and of course, the layout and ergonomics are just much better.

Now, bloated or not, Vista is necessity to all of us in IT world. And by now we kind of like the aero and quick search in start button whether we are ready to admit it or just moan for the sake of it. However. It is also true, that if we got that quick search and DX10 in XP majority of us would never look back at Vista. There would be no reason.
So, if Windows 7 is just a quirkier and slower version of "more of the same", then I say, this is it for me. This is where I leave this train. I love experimenting with OS's and I jump on every beta as soon as it appears, but by God it is all going in the wrong direction for Windows. I don't want things that are slower, fatter and more stupid to use. If it's more of the same, then I want it quicker. I want improvements. Just like I want the next engine of my car to be faster, smoother and more economical or my phone to have more features but also to be more clever and swifter. I want progress. Now, square buttons on taskbar are probably not it. Speed is what I am looking for. If the 7 is to be another Vista, for me it must be faster than XP or this time around I am just not bothered at all.
