Windows 7 Beta 1 (build 7000) screenshots

There's nothing in Windows 7 that couldn't have just been Vista SP2. The only time I'll bother upgrading is if I get a new Windows based laptop as I refuse to shell out £150+ for what's essentially a service pack.

Service packs, with the execption of XP SP2, has never added new features. It's just a roll up of existing hotfixes. So, no it isn't essentially a service pack.

Except that 2k was good.

Ironically 2000 suffered much of the same image issues that Vista currently does.

Installed Windows 7 and i love it. So far the only things that haven;t worked for me is Mcafee enterprise and 3d Mark 06. Really liking the task bar and being able to pin programs to it. Its possible i am imagining things but so far it feeks a lot more responsive than Vista. Just waiting to get my hands on the x64 version now.

What you mean more resonsive then vista?? Im using vista and everything is instant, loading ect. With 8gb of mem all of my everyday progs loads in 0secs cos there in the mem. Even if there not in the memory they still load up with in 1-2 secs. I just dont get it when ppl say vista isnt that responsive??

Do you think that Windows 7 will have the same teething problems in regards to games that Vista had (or still might; I've pretty much ignored Vista since its release)?

No it won't as its on the same codebase as Vista, anything that works on Vista should be fine on W7.

Windows 7 uses a different kernal
Windows 7 is faster
Windows 7 looks better too.

Windows 7 is just a rebadged version of Vista to convince all the haters to buy it. Sure it has a few minor new features but most of which will end up in Vista with SP2 or SP3. Consider how man many hours it took MS to write Vista (1000s) over 6 calendar years & $6B then consider how long Windows 7 has been in development (less than 1.5). Not hard to work out that's it just a rebadged & reskinned Vista with a new look is it.

Vista is without a doubt the best OS MS have ever written but like most new OS it suffered from niggling issues & poor word of mouth (XP was also slated back in the day and only really took off after SP1+2). The biggest mistakes MS made with Vista were two fold:

1: They included by default everything enabled when most home users would probably not use all the services and programs. MS should have included choices before installation then installed the most typical set of services & apps for that type of user.

2: MS let the hardware makers pressure them into giving Vista Certified logos when they were not really powerful enough to run the Aero interface (Intel were the biggest culrpits here with their onboard gfx cards).

MS know from experience the best way to market a poorly received product is to rebrand it which is exactly what they are doing plus throwing a few features in which were originally part of Vista anyway but got dropped when it was taking too long & costing too much to release. The Mojave Experiment was very interesting as it proved that public perception is the biggest hurdle Vista faces in being widely adopted. Steve Ballmer has even said 7 is just an improved version of Vista so if you hated Vista then 7 is not for you as its more of the same.

Microsoft always seem to get it right 2nd time around... Win95>Win98 (We'll ignore WinME!) Win2k>WinXP and now Vista>Win7.

From what I have read (More so around the Netbook circles) its extremely lightweight. It's XP fast but with Vista's good looks. It's got to be the first time a new OS has been released with decreased minimum/recommend specs!

It's quite an interesting prospect upgrading to the latest OS to actually improve performance against Vista. I know I will be on the wifes Laptop, that struggles a little bit on Vista.

It seems pretty stable and complete for an 'early' beta so seems likely the release date will be sooner rather than later.

You sure?

Does Vista SP1 use Minwin? I'm sure Windows 7 is using Minwin

All I know is, it uses less memory by about 6% then my installation of Vista which is x64, this is x86 installation of Windows 7. It is more responsive, it loads faster, it seems more than a rebadged Vista here, as it's plenty different, new software, new explorer etc..

People already slating it and they haven't even tried it, it's as if they are still on XP and don't want XP to die or are just plane hating anything that is not Windows XP, but then it may be people on Vista, scared of another change, just like Windows XP Vs Vista it's not Vista Vs Windows 7.

I know on my PC Windows 7 is a lot better, no need to strip it down like Vista, still runs quicker even though Windows 7 has not being stripped down.

lol @ the people slating it because it looks like vista.

i run XP with the classic theme, does that mean its as "rubbish" as win95? no. get over yourselves.

what exactly is the windows 7 kernel. From the articles I've read it should actual be the 7th iteration and thus the name. However so it wouldn't brake hardware and drivers like vista did. they have called it 6.1 even though it's supposedly significantly different.

Is this true, or are they just trying to make it look a lot different to vista than it is.

true. i did post a load of vids in a different Win7 thread to MS people explaining why, i'll try and find them.

edit - my bad, was on a different forum. have a google about it theres some vids of one of the MS heads at a convention/launch thing explaining the kernels etc.

It ain't much different. The MinWin fiasco is an engineering project - not the Windows 7 kernel.

MS are calling 7 a 'major' release, when it is really in fact a minor release - most of the changes are the user experience, performance and other tweaking. Vista was a major rewrite of the lot of the underlying parts of windows - this is just making use of them.
