Realism mods in FPS

Realism mods are all rubbish anyway. They emulate realism and always get it wrong. If a game is designed like that then fair enough, but I certainly wouldn't say any game is realistic.

I know that. The fact is, he can spray 10 shots of the Gewehr towards me and only 1 bullet needs to hit me. Who is going to use kar98 when the Gewehr does as much damage, and faster? No-one, the mod ruins the game.

It's a game and non tactile so it's never going to be "real". What realism mods tend to do (for me anyway) is slow the gameplay down and reduce the number of spray and pray rambo's out there. Plenty of people like the bolt action rifles (there used to be plenty of rifle only servers back in the day) and get on with them fine. It's not everyones cup of tea, but then it is a mod made by part of the gaming community that wants it. Variety being the spice of life and all that :)

Man, I feel for you so bad.

DO NOT PLAY COD5.

Seriously, without mods, Bolt-Rifles are rarely 1-hit kill to the chest, yet SMGs are 2-3 shot kill to the chest but also fire near perfectly accurate with next to no recoil.

I know how you feel though, CoD2 in it's prime was unbeatable.

They did the opposite in the mod I play, right now the pistol is more powerful then the ak47.
Why, because the ak47 fires like a jack hammer and the pistol fires dead straight. 7.62x39 < 9x19mm I think not

Hopefully it will change a bit as Im presently improvising with chucking contact explosives, anti vehicle grenades at people - rkg-3

One thing I've always wondered is whether that sort of thing happened in WW2, i.e. soldiers picking up enemy weapons to use (in cases where they didn't need to i.e. not jammed, low on ammo etc). Did they get training on using enemy weapons? I'd imagine that unless they did, they'd probably prefer to stick with a weapon they know intimately, rather than some dodgy foreign rifle they might struggle to reload in a combat situation.

In fact that's something I'd like to see more of in games, a 'skill/familiarity' rating you have with different weapons. So you'd actually have a reason to stick with that M1 Garand or rather than grabbing a MP40 or whatever, as your accuracy/reload time would be suboptimal (and vice-versa for German troops).

What game silversurfer?

In my sig.

Arent automatic rifles fairly straight forward, the main issue would be ammo and adjusting for sights & recoil maybe but up close its much the same I'd think

Realism shouldn't make weapons redundant if properly implimented but unfortunaltly realism is just applied to weapon damage and sometimes recoil which tends to make the weapon of choice the one that does most damage with least recoil, with highest rate of fire and largest mag capacity, usually an assault rifle which by strange coincidence is the weapon of choice for nearly all the worlds armies.
In the real world assault rifles do have down sides, they're usually long and not great for storming buildings or using in vehicles, you might prefere an SMG for this role. They're not the best suppression weapon, the round is too light and they dont have a great enough mag capacity, you want a Medium or heavy machine gun for this job. Suppression doesn't work well in games in any case, people just arn't afraid to die, they wouldn't be as brave if the bullets were real.
Realism is unattainable really, how do you model fatigue, fear, body armour preventing you from holding your weapon properly, condensation on optical sites, gas masks messing up eye alignment, your rucksack sliding forward and pushing your face into the ground, the ground being uneven and slippy......... there's too much to model.

How is PR nowadays? I played it a lot up until 0.6 but real life took over and I've hardly gamed since! I've got to say it was the best squad based shooter I have ever played.

They are gonna release ,85 soon I think

They've made it more extreme then ever but its still mostly about squad tactics yea.
Less arcade, more rts elements in it now and very long games :o

PR still rocks and IMHO is also the best squad based shooter. As ever it really depends on whether you get a decent VOIP squad up and running and that the squad stays together for a few rounds. If you do then a whole evening can be lost to an awesome session of gaming. If you don't then you're tempted to log off and do the washing up!
