Sick of 4870 - Is the GTX 260 any good?

The Corsair VX 450w should also power it, got a 40a 12v rail.

Just a small correction. The Corsair VX 450W ATX PSU is only able to supply 33 amps on the +12Volt rail. It's the Corsair HX 520W that is able to supply 40 amps off the +12Volt rail. :)

But would that be enough to allow for future expansions of another gfx card?

Hi Schnippzle, if you are looking at running two high end graphics cards then you will need something slightly more powerful then the Corsair HX 520W and you would need to be looking at either the Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU or the Corsair TX 750W ATX2.2 SLI Compliant PSU depending on the other hardware components in your system. :)

Lo mate,
Was more of a rhetorical question as a 450 watt psu wouldnt really handle 2 x 4870's in crossfire. As previously mentioned I ran into this problem when I had my Seasonic S12 500. Now I have a 850 watt Odin GT and 2 x 4870's :)

I don't care what ppl say but all gpus should run in the 40s-50s at idel, and if not its down to shoddy coolers or not enough air going around in the case. Thats the 1 thing Ive noticed lately, the first lot of cards manufactures make, the temps are rubbish cos coolers are sooo ****. Then when they make the next version of the same card, they put better coolers on them, lowering temps loads... I ask you why cant they put decent coolers on them in the first place??

Im sorry guys but this really anoys me, like most of you lot would change the stock coolers for decent ones but I cant, cos I have cerebal palsy so I have to rely on the stock coolers being half decent,. So any new cards that comes out, I have to wait a good few months until the coolers has improved

So my top priority when I buy new cards, I always check review on the cards for the temps before buying.

4870 at 33% for me keeps it below 80 load (or haven't seen it peak higher), not too hot and the fan is quieter than the Zalman in my case. It's not silent, but its not OTT.

33% is considerably louder than everything else in my system... id estimate it at around 32dba or so. Even 29% gets annoying... the tone to the fan is horrible, very "guttural", definately not a soft whoosh.

Guess I have a different fan then as mine isn't gutteral, just whooshy if I raise it too high, but obviously I guess it depends on the coolers people are running :) Also seems to depend on the cards, some seem quieter than others at the same speeds.

the 4870 cooler is remarkably loud. The 4850 stock cooler is far less annoying, I don't know if it's the actual volume or the type of sound....it even kept my gpu under 65C load.

If you go for a 260 make sure its at least a GTX260-216 as these are a little faster than 1Gb 4870s right now.

I went from a 4870 512MB to 260-216 and could not be happier as no more driver related issues for me or texture pop ins due to lack of Vram.

That's not even the case anymore. It would be absolutely pointless to sidegrade to a GTX260 216, and no, it's not a little faster than a 4870 1GB, it's faster than a 512MB though.

And before anyone complains that I'm being a fanboy, go look at the latest benchmarks, it shows the 4870 1GB being generally faster than GTX260 216 and occasionally faster than the GTX 280 in some circumstances.

So you don't care what the experts who made the GPUs say, you think you know better than them?

There's wanting lower temps, and then there's just being stupid and thinking you know better than the ones who made the chips themselves.

GPUs are fine to run at high temps. You might not like it, but it doesn't mean that they're crap. Think about it a bit more before ranting. The coolers they come with obviously aren't the best, but they're not 'crap' just because you can get coolers that are better at removing heat.

Is water cooling crap because phasechange gets lower temps?

It's all about cost, the coolers are designed to work with the cards within the safe boundaries of temps for them, they're not crap, they're 'adequate'.

Better cooling is always better, I've changed the coolers on both my 4850s to get lower temps and more overclocking headroom. They change the stock coolers to something better at a later date because at that time the manufacturing costs have gone right down so they can afford to put something better on while keeping the cost down.

Out of curiosity (sorry for thread hijack again) I'm totally at a stalemate whether to get the 260 "216" or the 1gig 4870 for my new build.
The only thing thats gonna really sway me is whether Crossfire, or SLI is likely to be better, say if I ever decide to add another card.
I'll be using the UD5 so both are compatible.

Can anyone give me any insight into Crossfire vs SLI on these two cards?
