From Facebook, Mike Carlson, NFL on Five pundit
Five have decided to drop their late-night American sports studio shows. This means that the last three regular season games with be our last ones. The NHL has already been cancelled, NBA will finish their season, and MLB will not resume next season.

It is a cost-cutting measure, so if a way were to be found to pay the costs of studio production, these shows could return, but that's a long-shot at present.

I'll be doing the Super Bowl for the BBC, of course.

You could voice your disappointment to Dawn Airey and Robert Charles at Channel Five. They were supportive of the shows in principle, but couldnt justify the expense during a retrenching.

And from the NFLUK forums, a email from Five Customer Services
Dear Matt

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding NFL on Five. We have been reviewing our Late Night Sports output over a number ofmonths and have decided that it may be necessary to change the contentof the sports block. This could mean that live coverage of Americansports will be affected; however, this has not been finalised yet asdiscussions are ongoing with the various federations. When we have concluded these conversations and put into place ourschedule we will announce any changes. Until that time there is littlepoint in us commenting upon speculation. Your comments have been noted in our Viewer Enquiries Report, which iscirculated throughout the company. If there is anything further we can help you with, please do nothesitate to contact us. Thank you for your interest in Five.

Yours sincerely

So, looks like the studio part of their coverage is definitely out and possibly all US Sport coverage. No more NFL on Five? meh:(

Source 1 Source 2 News is a week old, but only just seen it, sorry if its already been reported, couldn't find it on a search

I have to say I still don't see the American sports being that popular over. I know Wembley sold out - but I'm sure a good proportion were Americans flying over.

The sports while fun are just too stop/start for my personal taste...

The only one I'd be bothered about would be NHL, used to love it, but lost interest after it disappeared for a year.

you'd be surprised with how many people play american football in the uk greenlizard. and how many of us follow nfl teams as well.

tis a shame if c5 do can them all though as it will only be replaced with the phone in quiz stuff.

Big shame i really enjoyed five's coverage of the NFL have been watching it for many years. To the above comment, i really do not agree. American football has come on leeps and bounds in the last few years thanks to coverage from networks such as five and sky sports. THe interest in the sport has grown hugely the last decade. Just look at Wembly hosting the last 2 games and both events were sold out within days, that is how big the sport has become. We also have many more teams starting up, college and universities are competing these days.

I'm not saying it will ever be on the same level of football but it certainly will keep increasing in popularity.

Do people watch american sports ?

i found it was only ever on late at night, i dont see how it could have competed with all the p0rn

No more Jonny and Josh

:( :( :(

And no more Mike

:( :( :(

**** Sky and NASN and their never-ending ad breaks.

it doesn't really bother me directly, as I've been downloading all the chargers games since halfway through first year of uni, because that way I can watch my NFL in the middle of the afternoon and without having to fast fwd all the ads. I think it's a shame though, because it'll probably result in less british people taking an interest in the american sports. and that's never a good thing imo. Quite a few of my friends got into NFL just by watching it on 5 late one night and actually realising what was going on, and that it's not just rugby with ad breaks every 2mins.

Gutted there's no more MLB on five, that's been running for something like 11 years now. In fairness I have no idea how Five made money from it, you could count the number of ad breaks throughout a season on one hand.

NHL 09 (good game) got me back into looking out for the hockey scores. Devils didn't really feature much on Five so made do with internet radio (WFAN) until I recently realised it was available to watch live online (or as near as). A few late nights in the last couple of weeks as a result.

Bound to be plenty more but it was good to have the option of recording Five to watch at a more convenient time. :(

Its good that it was on, I got very into NFL years back for a few years, mostly because I'm a half insomniac and on those nights watching a couple games back to back late night was something to do. Its a really good sport and is generally not given its due by the english in general.

The stop start nature of it makes it a very social watching nature. Football, people talk and complain but not much, you want to concentrate, pee breaks, food, drinks, few friends around and its not so intense that looking away or talking will cause you to miss the action. The stop start style is the very reason why its so popular to watch the games in the states/worldwide as hell, with football two friends go to the bar, one hates football and one loves it, one will be bored and one will be incoherant for 90minutes.

With american footie you can go to a bar and half watch the game, miss nothing and the friend who doesn't like it isn't bored the whole time.

The commentary team for years has been pretty freaking amazing, not watched it in a long time though and forgotten the guys names but always found their commentary and knowledge of the game puts football commentary/insight/knowledge to absolute shame.

Similar situation to you mate, couldn't sleep at night and i'd end up watching the shows, i got really into it for a while. I do not watch it as much these days but i agree fives coverage was superb, most of that being down to Mike Carlsons knowledge and insightw wouldn't have been half as good. on the shows, without him the sho
