For most of this year, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 videogame console seemed finally to be taking off after a slow start. The PS3, trailing Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles, was closing in on the No. 2 Xbox 360, with new games and quarterly sales growth at twice the speed of last year.

But early results from this holiday season aren't promising. U.S. sales of the PS3 fell 19% last month from a year earlier, while sales doubled for the Wii console and rose 8% for the Xbox 360, according to research firm NPD. Analysts say they expect PS3 sales for this month to be flat or lower than last year, while sales for its rivals are likely to rise. And Sony may not reach its goal of selling 10 million PS3 consoles in the fiscal year through March, analysts say.

time to get rid before it becomes the next 3DO?

Its a garbage article TBH, sensational at best, its to make news and generate hits. The PS3 was selling more than the 360 until september when the 360 had its second price drop of the year. If the PS3 drops $100 next year it will then sell faster than before, just like the 360 did. Think just by NPD the PS3 in general has sold over 60% more this year than last, and pretty much the same in PAL land.
Cant see why with getting close to 19 million PS3 sold 3 million or so more than the 360 at this time, anyone would think its the next 3DO. T

If you don't use BC then sell your 60GB and buy another PS3 in a few months, getting a newer PS3 and profiting at the same time. I did a similar thing, sold my 60GB PS3 at the peak of demand (many months ago) for a daft amount of money and will buy another when they dip below £200.

No need to jump ship as all 3 are doing well with some great games ahead.

Comparing the PS3 to the 3DO is a little... over the top shall we say.

There is no way the console will fail, it probably won't do as well as Sony had hoped but then let that be a lesson to them for the next generation of consoles.

It seems obvious to me that Sony will have to drop prices very shortly if they dont want to continue a declining sales trend, so selling your 60GB now may be good timing.

The PS3 needs to be sub 200.

One of the selling points of the PS3 was the Bluray playback.

But that was when the standalones were £250+

Now that the BDP 350 can be had for 150 people are leaning to one of these and a 360 instead.

300 for the PS3 is high and its overpriced for what it is.

so £150 for bluray and £150 for the console. roughly equivalent to a premium 360 say £150

hows it overpriced?

Im glad i sold my 60 and replaced it with a 80. My first 60 was silent, my second one was quite noisy (in comparison to the first, fan stayed on), and my third 80gb is totally silent, ive not heard the fans spin up, its completely silent, a marvel.

I'm toying with the idea of selling my launch day 60GB PS3 on now too, but only so I can buy an 80GB one. I want the 65nm chips. Noise has never really bothered me - can hardly hear the thing (especially as it rarely gets used ;)) but a newer and cooler console can't be bad. Just wondering how much idiots are paying for 60GB consoles these days :) Backwards compatibility is of no concern to me at all - if I really want to play a PS2 game I'd just use my PS2 but I haven't played a PS2 game for years.

As much as I agree that the PS3 does need a decent price drop your comment about buying two seperate items as apposed to the PS3 is just stupid.

Don't see why?

The PS3 is a power hungry hot BD player.

And then what Its a games console.

Thats it.

At least with a Xbox you can use it with Vista as a media extender.

The PS3 does not even upscale DVD's played from its HDD FFS nor does it like files bigger than 4GB.

It can't play sequential vobs either :p

Its pap :p

As a games console its ok.

But as anything else its hardly ground breaking.

It's only overpriced in comparison to how cheap the 360, but in fairness you're getting a lot more for your initial outlay; wi-fi, Blu-ray, rechargeable controllers and a bigger HDD which you can later change yourself fairly cheaply.

No, it's a games console first, then a BD player. The fact that it's power-hungry and hot isn't much different to using a gaming PC for watching BDs; if you want something that's more efficient, use something that's designed solely for that task.

You can use the PS3 with Media Player, so it's not much different. The Media Centre frontend was quite nice on the 360 though, although in my experience it was horrendously laggy to navigate menus at times.

As for your criticisms about its media playback capabilities, part of me sees your point - if Sony want to market it as a media hub, it needs to be capable of a lot. But at the same time, it's a games console first and foremost, the fact that it has additional media capabilities is a bonus really. I still find it to be a lot more versatile than the 360 is. Your complaints seem very misguided; you're opinion of the PS3 is based on its secondary functions.

easyrider is right. If Sony price the PS3 more competitively, then they will get more market share; they get more market share, then more people see other people have them and so they get one too, etc. Snowball effect. And yes, it does slightly annoy me that Sony don't see how I see it. I'm on the internet afterall, I can't be wrong :)

Anyway, you may as well keep your PS3 for now; 2009 seems a big year for it.

BTW old guy, 60gb is already pretty damn quiet... And I thought the new ones were actually louder?

I wouldn't sell it now, because it's clearly easy to get a new one in the shops. Sell your console when the PS3 is selling massively and is harder to get.

You can pick up a PS3 for about £240 in quite a few places now, or £290 with 3+ games. Its not bad value at all but the average consumer see's a 360 at £160ish and doesn't really know the difference so goes for the cheaper. Shame really as the PS3 has really done well this year, I bought one again as sold my first when I moved into my first flat for some extra cash for £300 with 1 game and bought my new 80GB with Resistance 2, LBP and Motorstorm PR for £290 so didn't do to bad. Backwards compatibility isn't important to me so I didn't really lose out.

Stupid arguement that, does it mean that the 360 is a power hungry hot DVD player and a games console ?

As can the PS3, Media centre is a no no though

From firmware 2.5 it can play any video in the video section sequentionally. The 4gb is not a limit of the PS3 but of fat32 HDD, you can copy bigger files over the network and save to the PS3 HDD. Not sure why you would rip a DVD to the HDD if you own that dvd? If you mean Vobs im unsure if it does but AVIs and other video is upscaled by the PS3

Its pap :p
Your opinion

As a games console its ok.
Again your opinion

But as anything else its hardly ground breaking.
I would say its far more ground breaking than the 360, in many ways the wii is also pretty groundbreaking in its use of motion controls, cant think off anything ground breaking with a 360

Thought i would reply to those statments as you are unaware of the PS3 feature set by the sound of things, possibly due to firmware updates over the last 6 months or so.

Wish the PS3 would play .mkv files for HD content.

But even its DivX playback is much better than on the 360.

I still play RE4, so I definitely need to keep the PS2 compatibility going (until RE5 comes out :))

download mkv2vob - it very quickly remuxes it to a vob file which can be played fine on PS3. You will need to find a way to get it onto your PS3 if it's over 4Gb. I use a dual layer disc to burn it onto and then copy onto the PS3 from the optical drive.
