The GF & I have decided it is time to lose a bit of weight following months of drinking at university. Thing is we are both skinny but with a bit of weight around the stomach, particularly with her.

Luckily I am blessed with high metabolism and can shed weight extremely easily. On the other hand, she seems to struggle and last time she joined a gym the exercise didn't seem to have any major effect on her weight.

So my question is, are there any particular exercises which woman can do to facilitate fat burning? I say this because she isn't fit at present and struggles to maintain any sort of pace when running without frequent breaks. By contrast I usually run for 20-30 minutes at 16-17km/h on the treadmill. Exercise asides we are both cutting down on alcohol, snacks, fatty foods etc.

Many thanks and hope you all enjoy yourselves tonight!

I can't believe you're calling your gf a fatty

As for what to do.. I'm going to offer some very basic generic advice..

Basically Lay off the cake, pie and alcohol..

You could both eat more meals in smaller quantities (and make sure they are smaller quantities)

Look to eat:
-lots of veg
-reasonable amount of meat/fish
-some fruit (don't eat like 10 bananas in a row and think you're being healthy)
-some brown bread or brown rice or oats (don't go mad on them as they have lots of carbs)

Don't forget to drink reasonable amounts of water...
(THAT DOESN'T MEAN DRINK A GALLON AN HOUR AS SOME SILLY PEOPLE KILL THEMSELVES DOING IT)

Make sure you both go to the gym... Don't give yourself lame excuses..

You can't turn fat into muscle or burn fat in particular areas... Both get on the cardio and even get her to go on a few weight machines as they increase your metabolism. Don't do 100,000,000,000,00 situps...

don't expect to loose 1 stone in 2 weeks.. Don't give up.

Look long term and change habits. Looking for a quick fix is painful and ultimately pointless. Fad diets like Atkins and all the rest are for those that are either gullable or stupid.

Plenty good food and exercise after 12 months you'll look great and feel great.

when I was going through some personal trauma in 2002/2003 I found myself on my own and went down the gym everyday - playing squash, doing a few weights and LOTS of cardio!

Cardio = squash - running - rowing - cycling etc

During 2003 (which is probably the maddest year I have ever had - I ended up doing gym with my mates everyday apart from one rest day - every week.

On fridays for about 8 months I had 3 squash sessions booked at 3 different venues with 3 sets of mates - it was bonkers - I mean BONKERS - but great fun.

Needless to say my diet wasnt brilliant (being on my own - but I have never done TV dinners or takeouts really) but I lost 10 kg in 3 months and became the fittest I have ever been in my life - I dropped from 72KG - to 62 KG and kept my weight at about 62kg - 64 kg for about 2 years!

My only advice to you is drink lots, eats carefully, do LOADS of cardio (weights are a waste of time IMHO for what you are trying to do) and enjoy what you do - the MOST IMPORTANT THING - enjoy what you are doing and )as said above) dont make SHONKEY excuses and dont give up!!!

Additional basic advice / tough love.

Run more. Eat less. Stay focused.

Worry about the finer points when you get into it. You'll either love it and stick at it, at which point there's plenty of knowledgeable folk to help you get more out of your training and nutrition. Or you'll hate it and drop out.

Both of these options are great as long as you're happy :)

The first eight weeks will see pretty rapid changes. Work hard, don't cheat yourself.

If it were me I'd lay the tough love on the missus, along these lines:
"Run 4 times a week. Hard. Stop being such a pansy; don't stop so much."

There's been a few threads about diet and routines here lately. Which I've posted extensive replies to. These detail info on diet and things like HIIT (Which is a VERY effective fat burner. But damnably hard work, if you're unfit you'll be sick). take a look at these if you want some specific, indepth advice.

Good luck,

a really savage and unhealthy way to do it, would be to live off eggs for about 2 weeks, but it would work (mainly egg white)

until you started eating like a human being again, at which point you'd prompty begin carb gorging and stacking on pounds.

Crash dieting doesn't work.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Is drink a serious problem then? Being in the university environment I'd say it's unrealistic to claim I'll cut down on the alcohol. She's actually good in this respect and only really drinks on big night out.

I'm not being harsh by calling her fatty, I just want her to live a healthier lifestyle and to be fair she has put on a lot of weight since we started going out. I guess they stop trying :D

I'd avoid this advice, especially from a guy who's just under 6 foot and weighs less than 6 stone.

Alchohol tends to have a lot of calories in it so if you're trying to lose weight it will be a problem. Spirits will have less calories than beers though (as you'll tend to drink less).
