Ever think you've invented something only to be sorely dissapointed?

When i was doing my GCSE electronics projects i had a great idea to make a set of headphones that played an inverse signal to that coming into them, making a form of sound deadening.

The tutor told me such things weren't possible and that i should think about something else. Fast forward 10 years and they're on the news :(

I've been thinking of an idea on making a laptop that powers it self continously without having to rely on the battery. I was thinking maybe recycling the heat energy produced during operation. I saw an article on some website about some guys in a university in the US who'd invented something that recycles heat to power so this maybe workable.

Need therapy?:p

That's a good one. Haven't they been used by pilots for a long time?

That's pretty harsh.

On the bright side, there's a potential abusive phone call for you to carry out?

They've existed for ages and ages - in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they already existed 10 years ago!

Perpetual Motion

:p It should be possible to extend the battery life by re-using power, how much I've got no idea.

There's a big difference between thinking up a concept and actually inventing something though.

It'd still need a battery, you'd always have some heat loss and it'd never be 100% efficient.

Well it wouldn't work indefinitely, otherwise that would be a perpetual motion machine. Another idea would be to generate energy from key presses and mouse clicks (peizo-electric cells under the keys?). It would have to be a crazy low-powered machine, but I'm sure it's possible in theory.

Depends massively on what area you work in. Inventing a device that needs manufacturing is different from inventing an algorithim (I really should be able to spell that).

Well i was doing the gcse course 17 years ago. The headphones started showing up for tube users and air passengers about 10 years after that.

Imagine a laptop made using room temperature superconductors that put thermal energy back into the battery and generated power from key presses and clicks, you could use it for days
