picking up new s/h car on saturday 3rd jan

have arranged insurance but unlikely to receive docs until monday

i will have the v5 and mot when i collect

do you reckon i'll be ok to drive the car from the dealers to home without tax

be about a 50mile journey but will involve dartford crossing

car will be kept off road at home untill i tax it monday

When did the tax expire? If only on 1st Jan, tax it online. You have 7 days grace.

Otherwise driving it on the road without displaying a valid excise disc will get you nabbed. Although ANPR etc doesn't read your physical tax disc so if you've taxed it online you'd need to get pulled or photographed by a DVLA road tax van to get done.

If its from a dealer, they CAN tax it for you whatever excuses they offer as to why they cannot.

I got some free 7 day insurance where they emailed me dealer once I'd hung up the phone and they used that to tax it for me.

I don't understand why dealers get arsey about taxing cars these days, it's a simple matter of going to the post office with their traders policy and using that.

^^^ thanks for all the replies

He doesn't need any of your details at all, his trade policy will cover the taxation of any of his stock.

i will speak to the dealer on friday and see if he can tax it on my behalf -this will save me a lot of hassle

the only issue is wether he is happy to stump up the £210 in advance of me settling up on saturday (though he already has my credit card details regarding the £100 deposit)

can i expect him to charge an admin fee to do this ? - he is not a main dealer

I would expect this of a dealer for no charge. £210 is hardly a big deal, and as you say he has your payment details anyway.
