I've never quite followed Shakespeare at school. The ye olde english was too confusing and the various plays difficult to follow. When I think back all I can remember is sitting in an English class bored, with our over enthusiastic teacher trying to get us to act out scenes and dishing out too much homework.

Now I'm older, perhaps a little wiser (with an attention span potentially greater than 10 minutes) I'd like to watch a few plays to see if Shakespeare's works now offer me anything.

Does anyone have an opinion of which play to go and see first? To perhaps ease me into Shakespeare. I was going to see Hamlet down in London at the Novello with David Tennant and Picard, but due to a bereavement we can't go.

Cheers

I remember back in High School we were studying Romeo and Juliet. After reading the book in class the teacher said we were going to watch the movie. Everyone in the class thought it was the olden time one and came a huge sigh and someone saying Boring ******* movie.

Only to our suprise we were greeted by Leonardo Di Caprio, weilding two guns at a petrol station shouting swearies. Damn we enjoyed the gangsterism of it all.

Romeo and Juliet was a good one, it's the only one I remember.

Romeo and Juliet is too cliché and overdone now. You'll be much better of starting with the likes of Hamlet, A Midsummer's Night Dream and Othello.

Much Ado About Nothing, Othello, Hamlet, The Tempest, Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew are probably my favourites.

Othello the best of all.

Othello could be the way forward. I've heard some good reviews about that play and it lists highly in many favourite lists.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Go to the globe - it's five pounds so if you don't like it you haven't lost much! Seriously though it's actually quite good there. My favourite plays are probably henry IV parts 1 and 2 and henry V.

I know it's not exactly on topic, but this Big Brother clip creases me up each time I see it on a TV clip show. I just can't can't get my head around how a grown man can never have heard of Shakespeare.

What a complete and utter retard!

I would like to read the works of Shakespeare one day simply because it will make me better at pub quizzes!! :D
