Mum who couldn't afford Christmas gifts for her kids wins £1million on a scratchcard

She will chav it all away no doubt. I wonder how many scratch cards she has got through in the past before she hit the jackpot.

If she was that close to poverty it's really sensible to use the last of it on scratchcards.

I suppose "played for and got" should be used but stories like this just foster false hope for many poorer families.

I feel sorry for gamblers, I don't really see the attraction tbh but then I am not desperate for money or a mediocre buzz. Spending £5 on a scratch card wouldn't be my first priority but they are probably over hyping it, I bet she isn't that poor. She will have a roof over her head, TV and food. So hope is important to people once they aren't going to die in the next few hours.

However once you have the money, that is when imo it sorts out the fools. As said most people would invest 90% of it because you would be sorted for live with a little investment savvy. Blowing it all on a 50k brand new car isn't doing that.

I think everyone should be given a chance and these people have likely been dealt a bad card compared to many in the UK, now they have been given a better chance than many. Will they still mess it up? If after a 1 million quid head start you lose it and become a bum again there really is no hope.

Not really no. I'm just making a sweeping generalisation about people who I don't actually know, because of something I read they'd said. Mostly it's down to snobbery and my overwelming belief that I'm so much better than those other people.

Welcome to the real world! If you can't find a spare seat feel free to sit in the corner while we all go about our business :D

Am I the only one who doesn't find this a wonderful tale of Christmas joy?

I think on the whole I'm pretty optimistic, but when I read stuff like that I just think... what was a woman on the brink of poverty doing spending the last bit of her money on gambling? Sure, she was lucky to win and well done to her.

Maybe I just have an image of the type of people who buy scratch cards, and maybe a 41 year old woman nearly out of money with 4 kids to feed who spends it on chance fits that image. Something about the story reeks of having to justify itself though. "It was the last of her money" "She stopped playing the lottery" "It was a one off" etc etc. I’d hazard a guess she spends her weekdays at Amusement throwing nuggets into slot machines, but that’s probably too far judged.

Some people don't understand how far £5 goes. Easily a meal for her and her 4 kids. Ugh, priorities. I wouldn’t mind it if the story wasn’t trying to sugar coat itself. Am I just being a scrooge or do other people see this?

I find it hard to believe she was on her £5 with the amount of benefits this country gives away.

But, good for her :)

Says it all for me.

Says what? That a kid who's just been given £100k has decided to invest 70% of it and with the remaining 30% decided to buy what is probably his dream motor?

What's wrong with that, he seems sensible enough. It's not like he went and shouted "OMG FERRARI" is it? Hell, if I were given the same chance at his age I'd have splashed it on a decent Cossie. :D

He's a kid, it's £70k! He's probably going to stick it in a high interest account.

Is there even such a thing nowadays? Besides, by high interest account you mean high interest in drugs account. Bloody ******.

I knew there was a reason I liked you Ken. Seriously though, £70k in the bank isn't to be frowned at really. The £30k on a motor is though, especially considering you can have a decent little Exige S1 for half that.

Well yes 70k in the bank is jolly good but this kid dropping 30k on a motor that 70k wont last long. When I tried to get insured on my dads car in england (7 series diesel) The guy asked me if I was dreaming and i never got a quote less then 4.5k

This kid is dumb, he is going to lose it all. I can tell. If i was him I'd buy a nice little Mondeo and keep the rest for the future.

However! If I was me I would spend 15k on a nice Z4 and put the rest into my infamous stock picks and reap 40% yields for as long as possible.

bloody ******.

At the end of the day she paid her money for the card, she won 1 million quid, nice one for her. Im not sure how she or her family will spend it and personally i dont care, as its not a fund i had to pay into, paying taxes in this country is far worse, to look after all the degenerates and lazy gits who wont work.:(

I have just reread the article and apparently one goes to University, so she cant exactly work full time whilst studying a fulltime degree course

No, but with her mothers income situation she will be entitled to free fees, the maximum loan of over £3k a year, and a grant of at least £1k a year she will never need to pay back. So thats over £4k a year before she even starts a 20 hours a week part time job for another £4k a year..
