Me brother- in-law is after replacing his old 312" toshiba crt (bloody good tv btw:p) and want to replace it with an LCD. Now he wants an LCD a plasma, which kinda kicks the "KUROS" into touch unfortunately.
So what do ppl here recommend?

A 42" LCD that kinda kicks the KUROS in to touch? I'd recommend taking him to see a psychiatrist but you've probably already considered that.

The best he's going to get for that kind of money is something like the 40" Samsung A656 but even that is light years behind the KURO range.

my parents are thinking about the exact same thing.. replacing their 32inch crt toshiba
can't say they have much of an idea really, or me when it comes to tellys! they are thinking somthing along the lines of 42inch around 600-800quid? is that do-able? perticurly with retailers with the sales and all?
they have normal sky, and nothing really high def, but they do want to 'future' proof...
are they asking too much?

Have you actually read this forum?

There are loads of posts that mention the Panasonic TH42PX80. This can be had for £499 from many places.

It was £450 on Xmas day too! An absolute bargain and the best TV without a doubt in that price range.

The Samsung A656 is a decent tv too, but costs more. I have one in my bedroom for gaming on.

I dont understand the question, does he want an LCD or a plasma, if he has £800, why are people recomending TV's that are not 1080p?

Panasonic TH-42PZ85B - 42" Widescreen 1080p Full HD Plasma TV - £719. is the first google result.

Or am i missing something?

Depends on his source. If he watches just Sky, then the PX80 will be better cause of it's exceptional SD performance. It's by no means bad at HD either, better than a lot of 1080p LCD's.

If he's only using it for mainly Blu-rays and some SD material, then the PZ will probably be better.

To save him £300.

To be honest though, there's enough info out there for people to decide themselves. However most are too lazy and instead rely on a bunch of strangers to tell them what TV to get. Go figure.

The others have said it well.

Why do you have to get 1080p, because the marketing man and salesmen say so ? Have a read up on it and decide if it is needed for your needs. For most people out there, they would not be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p feeds on near identical sets at normal viewing distance anyway. Plus as soon as the picture starts to move detail is lost anyway so it will be impossible to tell.

1080p is nothing special, and something like the panasonic PX80 actually destroys LCDs with its SD quality, and looks better than most of them in HD too :p

I would say that if your brother in law is moving to an LCD from a CRT, then he will be sorely disappointed with the normal tv picture quality, I still haven't found an LCD that can match my parents old toshiba 36 CRT.

To be fair though, my Samsung 40A656 still has a great SD picture, however plasmas do have the advantage with colours (and thats without mentioning my Kuro :D )

All depends on the room too, in a bright room that gets plenty of light with a Tv that gets watched in the daytime then a LCD may be more suitable regardless.

Who's Brother in law?
My brother in law?
I dont have a brother a in law?
I'm not after a telly, i have a 1080p telly and I can see why i would want one over one that wasnt.

I'm asking why if one is in the guy's budget, why not get one when everybody is moving to HD?
I'm all for saving money, but sometimes i think people try and convince themselves that black is white.

WHy pay more for something you probably won't see an improvement with. You are talking about everyone moving to HD, but that is a very expansive generalisation.

Tv will never be broadcast in 1080p, nearly all X360 and PS3 games are 720p and possibly lower, with only the odd few in native 1080p. This leaves blus and hd-dvds, and I have explained the conditions where 1080p is of slight benefit.

I really might write a sticky, then just refer people to it, it would be much easier linking in some articles where people could go and read and understand why I talk about things on here the way I do :D

You dont need to, Because there will never be anything ever produced better than a PS3 or Xbox 360, and Bluray will never be mainstream.

Ill be wanting OLED when 1080p is mainstream anyway. I think people overlook the fact CRT was never perfect but neither are any of the current flat screen technologies, either LCD or Plasma.

I just picked it up for £405 (not a typo) delivered using a couple of different codes :D. Have to wait 2-3 weeks for it to be delivered, but I can live with that.

Samsung 656 to be honest with you...awesome LCD.

I agree, the only 'problem' i had with it was it blurring in GOW2 on my Xbox.

However over Xmas I have played it on my parents Panny 37PX70 Tv and also my old 32" Toshiba LCD and realised this blur is actually due to the game and not the Tv processing.
