Does anyone here tip takeaway delivery drivers?

I only really tip in restaurants, if the service has been good and the staff have put extra effort in. I've worked in a hotel bar/restaurant in the past and though didn't expect tips, you regularly got them if you've really tried to make it as enjoyable as possible. If the service is miserable then I see no reason to tip.

I always give a tip, even if its just 50p or something. They need something to make up for the fact that they're a takeaway delivery boy :p

But it's something people do at college or to supplement income if necessary. If they are doing take away deliveries full time they need an incentive to leave tbh.

Often, no. There are drivers and take-aways round here that seems to think you don't care how long it takes to get to you. one time I had a guy turn up 2.5 hours late, after I'd gone to bed, 45 mins after I'd cancelled the order, saying he wanted money from me because he was a new driver.

The service around here is poor, so i tend to look out for people that can do their job, re-use them whenever I fancy something they sell, and give them a bit extra for doing their job better than others around us.

Sounds like mechanics around here.....

My mechanic gets a crate of decent beer or couple bottles of wine every xmas, just look after the people that look after you :)

This goes for when i'm in restaurants too, but "sometimes". I tip depending on the service i've received.. I know that may sound silly when ordering a takeaway, but if they get here sharpish and have a smile on their face then I see no reason not to chuck in a couple of extra quid, especially if its a £17-18 pizza and I only have a £20 on me.

I usually just round up the cost and tell them to keep the change

saves me waiting for them to find the correct change

if the total is already rounded up the driver is out of luck heheh

Why does the method of payment make such a difference? Why does the fact he adds 10 seconds to his delivery by collecting cash on behalf of his employer mean he is worthy of a tip yet the guy from DHL is not?

Do you tip your till operator in McDonalds? You pay them..

As wush says it is partly because I've got cash in my hand, I haven't pre-paid for the service so therefore it is at my discretion to add more for a job well done or not. If I was paying couriers on delivery of an item then I'd be more likely to tip them but since I've already paid for the service then I don't elect to pay again often - I'm sure you'll point out that I've already paid for the delivery of the takeaway too but it somehow seems different.

I'm well aware that you and wush (amongst others) are trying to point out it is a largely arbitrary demarcation and it is but I've never claimed to be entirely logical or rational, I'm just explaining what I do.

Oh and I don't eat in McDonalds but I might tip other people who serve me food from a fast food place or cafe.

We would order quite frequently from a local delivery firm, the driver's had been openly offended that we didn't tip, which in all honesty as i'm not obligated to do so only made me more adamant not to tip them. I remember thinkign for a while that the price always seemed a little high and when I checked the prices compared to what was written on the receipt they had been overcharging us a few pounds on our orders. I always ask for the price when I phone in now but we always figured them doing this was in response to us never tipping them.

As per title really. Its something I am curious about because I got a takeaway last night and the guy who delivered it looked like he was expecting some sort of tip.

I never tip the person who delivers to me because I assume they get paid by the company anyway. So does anybody here tip them?

If they get here quicker than expected then maybe, otherwise no.

The only time I would consider tipping is if they went above-and-beyond the call of duty and provided exceptional service.

If they're on time, friendly and have my order correct - then they've simply done their job, and deserve no tip.

I think this is common in the USA, but over here even our minimum wage is pretty much a living wage.

Not for drivers, they live off the tips, due to the price of petrol, insurance etc.

I do tip the driver. That said I don't often get food delivered for myself/ I'm not usually the one paying :p

I don't tip anyone. I don't get tipped for doing my job, and never have with any job I've had.

Mr Pink had it right.

I'll tip if I get EXCEPTIONAL service (or am with a fille), but that happens maybe thrice a year.

I assume that you mean 'Filly', otherwise you are talking about your daughter in French; So, you would tip to look good in the young females eyes but not otherwise! nice.

I don't mind tipping delivery people if they are on time and not trying to take the **** by saying that they haven't got any change.

Try getting a drink at the bar in USA without tipping ....... you'll wait a very long time for service next time.

Or I'm talking about any girl in French... as like in English nouns have different meaning based on context. E.g. j'ai une fille de deux ans or ma fille. Which I didn't use.

He tips the delivery guy when his daughter is there as she will do nothing but spend the money on sweets.

Whats wrong with that?

I used to in the past, but I don't anymore.

Some years back, if I ordered a pizza, chances are, it was some guy in school or college who was doing it in the evenings to make a bit of money. These days though, its all Eastern European guys, the worst one of which, nearly hit someone at the speed he came down our street. I tried to tell him that he was driving like an idiot, but he didn't seem to understand.

Regardless though, the way people pay for things has changed. If I order Pizza from Papa Johns or Dominos online, I don't even need any physical cash, so I don't need to get out my wallet to pay a tip. Not to mention, if you are paying nearly £15 for a pizza, which is discounted if you go and pick it up yourself, you have already paid a 'delivery charge' so I don't see a reason to pay a tip.

People I do tip though are taxi drivers and when I get my hair cut.

Just pay them in notes and let them keep the change :)

Actually thinking back to the times I've ordered dominos online, I think half of them ended up having something missing or wrong.

Not really in the mood to tip in these circumstances
