I've always had Virgin fibre optic but now i'm living with my partner who has BT Broadband, home hub etc...

The wireless router is downstairs and my desktop is upstairs.

How would i connect the phone line which is next to my desktop?

BT to RJ45 connect and then a coupler to put the cat5 cable into?

Andy

yes that'd get the BT cable on Cat5 but your router won't take CAT5 into the ADSL port. You'd need to convert it again and microfilter it.

You're best off moving the router closer to the line entry point.

I'm confused, why are you talking about phone lines? IF you want to plug CAt5 into the PC you need to run it from the router directly to your PC or connect to the router wirelessly. You can't connect the phone line directly to your PC.

Move wireless router next to master phone socket(next to your pc ? )
cat 5 from ADSL router to your pc

Does the router have an ADSL modem onboard?
:)

It's already at the main phone socket downstairs.

I thought i could run it from the upstairs phone line so it goes -

Phone line - bt to rj45 connector box - cat5 cable - computer.

Andy

No - i'm trying to understand what you want.

Downstaires is where the router is:
So Phone line into Modem

Your Pc is your staires. You need to get a Cat5E and plug one end to the router and the other end to your PC.

mmm so if the ADSL router is at the main/master socket all you need to do is run i cat5 cable from your pc to the router or maybe a wireless card/dongle in your pc?
Sorry am getting a bit confused here
BEST WAY i have found is adsl router connected to master socket then cat5 to pc.You get better speed/synch using master socket i have found

What the hell is a master socket?

Yes - you cannot convert a (Any phone line ) around the house into a network cable to be plugged into the comuter. It must come from an from a router.

Aruffell, not meant in an offensive way at all, but go have a quick read of what ADSL is and how it works, will make a lot more sense to you that way.

Fornow think of it like this:

It used to go:
1)Virgin line in
2)Splitter (on the wall) for TV/Internet
3)Modem connected to Internet side of splitter
4)Computer connected to modem.

It now works as:
1)BT line in
2)Microfilter (splitter) in the phone socket or a filtered master socket (these are usually kinda crappy by the way).
3)Modem connected to the Internet side of the splitter
4)Computer connected to modem.

If you want to make more than one computer have access you have to go AFTER the modem. Easiest way is to replace the modem with a DSL router (make sure it mentions dsl as there is a different type for cable/virgin) then CAT5 from computers to the router. Stick in the username/password into the router and it will (usually) work out the rest. CAT5 can be replaced by wireless to the router or partly replaced by powerline/homeplug etc (powerline/homeplug is networking over the mains cables and can be googled i'd recommend if you don't want to run cables around the house, buy a set/pair and they will work out of the box).
