Does anyone here tip takeaway delivery drivers?

I tip them for prompt delivery (usually a quid) as their wages are cr**

I recently managed to get Star Tandoori to deliver again as they have had a lot of grief with our estate. Naturally I tip him. The last time being Xmas eve and he refused my tip and wished me Merry Xmas.

for fast food services i always try and give them a tip if i can due to the fact that i used to do the job myself years ago.

i found that around 50% of people used to tip me while i was working from as little as 50p upto £10

I ordered pizza on Christmas eve and tipped the delivery driver 4 quid. He grunted and left. Didn't seem too happy, but I doubt I would if I was working Christmas eve!

I never tip take away deliveries. If they expect money for delivering it then they should charge a delivery fee imo. If it says "Free Delivery" on the menu then I take that as free not "Free but we expect you to tip us".

If you go into pizza hut and order £15 worth of pizza, you've aid for the petrol there and back. If you placed a £15 order over the phone and its brought to your door, it saves you petrol money and going out. I tip for having it brought to me.
Comparing it to a postman isn't right. You pay for a stamp which is paying for the entire postal service, from dropping the letter/parcel off to the other person receiving it.
For a pizza you just pay for the pizza itself and not delivery, so why not give the delivery person a bit of money for the extra service? Thats what it is in my mind, I pay the same price but don't have to go out, drive, wait for 20mins in a cold pizza shop.

they survive off the tips.
Then the practice of tipping would still be the problem since it legitimised these death-sentence wages and relieved the employer of responsibility.

Behave.

1. Collection prices are significantly cheaper. If they aren't, then the place is screwing you.
2. They make huge profits on the food.
3. The establishment is employing the person as a driver - not you.

You do realise if you collect the pizza you will get it considerably cheaper? My local Dominos for example will give you buy one get one free if you collect but not if you get it delivered..

Why does the method of payment make such a difference? Why does the fact he adds 10 seconds to his delivery by collecting cash on behalf of his employer mean he is worthy of a tip yet the guy from DHL is not?

Do you tip your till operator in McDonalds? You pay them..

Usually you'll be paying DHL a specified fee for the service.

Most places offer free delivery over a certain amount anyway.

That's special deals though, completely different. I'm just talking about the difference between getting off your backside, driving the shop and waiting in the cold, or sit at home and wait for a knock.

And you pay the pizza place a fee as well. Hint: It isn't actually 'free delivery' at all.

should we all ask for discounts if we pick up from any old takeaway?

All the small-time takeaways round here charge £1-2 on top if you want it delivered.

The amount they charge for pizzas from Dominos or Pizza Hut is incredible if you stop and think about it. Your free delivery is buried amongst that.
